The application of telemetry in the medical field to remotely monitor various vital signs of ambulatory patients.

The process of telemetry involves the transmission of data from a source to a receiver typically by radio frequency electromagnetic means. Telemetry has been successfully used in biomedical applications to permit the remote monitoring of patients. An example of a useful signal to be remotely monitored is the electrocardiogram(ECG). A transmitter attached to a patient sends an ECG signal to a remote receiver where it is decoded and monitored. Such biomedical telemetry permits the patient greater mobility than if he were attached to a stationary monitor, thus enhancing the therapeutic benefits from patient mobility.

Particles in a paste mixture will not settle out of the mixture if allowed to remain stationary in a tank or in a pipeline. It can be placed in stopes with or without binder addition depending on the strength requirements for backfill. Improved pumping technology, environmental concerns and the need for a low cost/high strength fill in mines are driving mine operators to consider paste backfill as a tailings management and mine backfill alternative. The main advantages and disadvantages of a paste backfill system over a conventional hydraulic backfill plant are generally accepted as :... higher strengths can be achieved with an equivalent cement content; drainage of water and slimes from the fill are minimized, reducing the need for bulkhead construction and extensive drainage works. This feature also reduces maintenance on sumps and mine de-watering pumps; in some cases, unclassified tailings can be used to make paste rather than just the coarse fraction as is the case for hydraulic backfill; shorter stope cycle times can be achieved because an equivalent strength can be achieved in a shorter time with paste backfill; paste backfill systems achieve lower porosities than conventional fill thereby increasing the tonnage of material that can be disposed of underground; and, since paste backfill is deposited as a non-segregated mass of backfill(because cement particles are not displaced by the internal movements of the draining water), more predictable strength properties for the fill can be achieved.

Biological Filter. High-rate treatment can also be obtained in a biological filter system. Biological filtration is a technique for promoting contact between a free-flowing wastewater and a stationary growth of microorganisms in the presence of atmospheric air. The system does not depend on filtration in the usual sense for its effect.... Biological filter systems(such as the trickling filter) have generally proven to be unsuitable for pulp and paper wastewaters, exhibiting even greater instability to waste variability than activated sludge systems. However, the rotary disc system(a more recent design of biological filter) has been successful on a number of wastewaters and appears to deserve consideration for future applications. In this system a biological growth is cultivated on the disc surfaces. A series of closely-spaced corrugated plastic discs are anchored to a rotating shaft and supported above a trough through which the wastewater is channeled at a controlled rate. The lower 30 to 40% of each disc extends into the wastewater, while the upper portion is exposed to air. Thus, an area of biological growth alternates between submergence to absorb food and exposure to air for oxidation. Les lits bactériens (filtres biologiques) constituent un autre mode de traitement à haut rendement. La filtration biologique consiste à mettre un liquide résiduaire en écoulement naturel au contact d'une population fixe de micro-organismes en présence d'air atmosphérique. Ce procédé ne constitue pas une filtration au sens habituel du terme. [...] Cependant, il s'est avéré que le modèle récent de filtre biologique, à disque rotatif, était efficace pour le traitement de certains effluents, et l'avenir de cet appareil s'annonce donc prometteur. Ce filtre comporte un ensemble de disques rapprochés, en plastique ondulé, assemblés sur un arbre rotatif et installés au-dessus d'une cuve où arrive l'effluent à traiter. La base des disques (environ 30 à 40% de leur surface) plonge dans l'effluent, le haut étant à l'air libre. La zone de croissance biologique est donc alternativement immergée, ce qui lui permet d'absorber des nutriments, puis exposée à l'air pour que l'oxydation se produise. Le nombre d'appareils installés en série dépend de la réduction de DBO souhaitée.

A number of support materials are available for liquid chromatography. For general application, Corasil, Zipax, or other similar materials are widely used supports for liquid-liquid systems; a polar liquid is normally used as the stationary phase, with a nonpolar mobile phase. If a non-polar stationary phase is to be employed(called reversed-phase liquid-liquid chromatography), then the support has to be silanized by exposing to chlorosilane vapor in a desiccator for a few days, followed by washing with alcohol. Then it is ready for coating with the stationary phase.

Timken lubricant test. The Timken test determines the load at which a film of lubricant will fail and cause scoring. The test consists of a revolving test cup(race) that rubs on a stationary block. Speeds are infinitely variable, but usually run at a race speed of 800 rpm. Load is applied through a lever arrangement, at the end of which the necessary weights are gradually added automatically at a rate of 2. 3 lb/sec. Refined Timken test machines, capable of infinitely variable loading from 0 t 1000 lb, measure friction, wear, and frictional temperature. Failure of lubricant is indicated by scoring of the test block. Tests of oils, greases, compounds, and solid lubricants can be made. [The results of such tests are reported variously in terms that relate to friction, seizure, stick-slip, wear, temperature, and load capacities under constant or different conditions]. Typical acceptable load values for leaded gear compounds obtained just prior to scoring range between 30 and 55, with an average of 40 expressed as the Timken OK load.

These mobile/transportable systems have the advantage that destruction can be performed on-site, which eliminates the costs and risks of transporting wastes from a waste site to a stationary destruction facility. Few systems are truly mobile in that the system or system modules can travel by road to the site and be operative with no additional site assembling or fabrication. In general, the size and complexity of thermal destruction systems requires site preparation, system module assembly, and a commissioning trial burn period prior to hazardous waste operation.
