This very active swimmer has a powerful streamlined body that reaches a maximum length of approximately 3 m. The back of the porbeagle shark is dark grey to bluish black in colour and its belly is white. The head is stout, the snout is pointed and the eyes are large. The mouth has rather large, pointed blade-like teeth with smooth edges that are identical on both jaws. Males reach maturity at age 8 and females at age 13. The porbeagle shark's typical life expectancy is estimated to be between 25 and 46 years.

The term feathering refers to the operation of rotating the blades of a propeller to an edge-to-the-wind position for the purpose of stopping the rotation of the propeller whose blades are thus feathered and to reduce drag. Therefore, a feathered blade is an approximate in-line-of-flight position, streamlined with the line of flight. Some, but not all, propellers can be feathered. Feathering is necessary when an engine fails or when it is desirable to shut off an engine in flight. The pressure of the air on the face and back of the feathered blade is equal, and the propeller will stop rotating. If it is not feathered when its engine stops driving it, the propeller will "windmill" and cause drag.

An overlying layer of sediment may later fill these depressed markings, forming positive-relief casts in the covering bed ... The casts are termed sole markings because they appear on the sole, or bottom, of the younger stratum.

Sole marks, or tool marks, are sedimentary structures found on the bottom of certain current-deposited strata, that indicate small-scale current disruption, or scour. Commonly preserved as streamlined flutings in the rock bed, the responsible obstacle may be a twig or pebble-anything large enough for sediment to preferentially erode and deposit around.

The initial erosion-producing event can result simply from current scour, or may result when an object, called a tool, is dragged by the current across the muddy bottom. Thus, some sole marks are also known as tool marks.
