An Advisory Committee on Assistive Devices has been formed to provide the Minister of Industry, with advice on how to support the advancement of assistive technologies in Canada. The Committee's first meeting was held in Ottawa, October 31-November 1. This committee(ACAD) meets three times each year to provide input to the Minister of Industry on issues dealing with the assistive technology industry. It also provides input on the departmental planning process to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are taken into account. For example, it was on the recommendation of the ACAD that the Information Highways Applications Branch included accessibility as a criteria in the applications process for the Community Access Program. Inspired in 1981 by the search for nine year old Jimmy Beveridge in southern California, this program was initiated by Ab Taylor to teach children how to survive in the woods if they ever become lost. The program focuses on the most basic and vital survival principles and although specifically designed for children between the ages of 7 and 11, it can be effective with slightly younger and older children as well. The Rockcliffe Flying Club is a non-profit flying club based at Ottawa/Rockcliffe Airport in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. After the Royal Canadian Air Force ceased most operations at the field in 1964, the flying club began using it for aircraft rental and flight training. Many combinations of herbicides result in either additive or synergistic effects on weeds. The activity of soil-acting herbicides depends on such factors as persistence, absorption properties of the soil, soil organic matter, soil types, soil moisture, and cultivation. Herbicide rates may need to be adjusted on the basis of soil texture and type.
