The upper water layer of the ocean contains air bubbles, induced by wind and waves. These air bubbles attenuate the sound transmission and reception from a hull-mounted transducer... The thickness of the bubble layer may be 5-10 m, or more, depending on the sea state. A towed transducer operates below this bubble layer. The transducer is closer to the fish. This gives a better signal to noise ratio, and also the resolution of single fish is improved because the width of the sound beam is smaller. A "RAW Signal Data" product contains raw or unprocessed radar video baseband data in complex in-phase and quadrature signal (I and Q) format as they are recorded by the spacecraft. The only processing performed to the downlink X-band "raw signal data" is the frame synchronization, meaning re-assembly of the data into contiguous radar range lines in matrix form, and the CEOS [Committee on Earth Observations Satellite] formatting. The RAW product can contain any single beam mode, or for ScanSAR any combination of different beam modes, depending on the operation of the SAR instrument during the data reception or recording period. A RAW product cannot, however, combine data from more than one beam mode, i. e. data from two different beam modes are always packaged as two separate products. A RAW product must be SAR processed before it can be displayed as imagery. RAW products are typically produced on 8 mm(Exabyte) tapes. The goal of the course is to learn how to create a RADARSAT data acquisition plan and order data. This course is complementary to the course being offered by RADARSAT International on their products and services. The attendees will learn fundamentals of radar remote sensing and its application to the marine(ice/oceans) or land(agriculture/hydrology) environments(optimal beam modes, look direction, resolution etc). The orbital characteristics of RADARSAT and its implications on acquisition planning and site imaging will be presented, along with an overview of spacecraft and acquisition policy(use of OBR, ground station reception facilities and data ordering etc). Ce cours a pour objectif de montrer comment créer un plan d'acquisition de données RADARSAT et commander des données. Il s'agit d'un complément au cours offert par RADARSAT International sur ses produits et services. Les participants aborderont les éléments de la télédétection radar (largeur de faisceau, direction de visée, résolution, etc., optimales) et de son application aux milieux marin (glace, océans) et terrestre (agriculture, hydrologie). On traitera également des caractéristiques orbitales du RADARSAT et de leur incidence sur la planification de l'acquisition et de l'obtention d'images d'emplacements en plus de fournir un aperçu de l'engin spatial et de la politique concernant l'acquisition (utilisation de l'enregistreur à bord, installations de réception à la station terrestre, protocole de commande des données, etc.).
