A rigid or articulated ramp attached to a pipe-laying barge, which serves as a catenary support for the welded pipe as it is lowered onto the sea bed.

The rigid stinger is in two curved, hinged parts, but the articulated type is made up of four or five sections, perhaps 100 metres long overall. Buoyancy controls can regulate the depth of the stinger to optimize the bending forces on the completed pipe on its way to the sea floor. There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned, the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof.... Main roof is composed of strata above the immediate coal bed roof that forms the overburden to the surface. Frequently, the term is applied only to a massive, strong rock layer that does not break or bend until all of the coal is removed by pillaring or by longwall mining.

A small, immobilized bed, microbe bioreactor.

The bioreactor "plug" is made of slotted PVC pipe which is screw cap sealed at each end. Each plug is loaded with an inert porous material which serves as a structural support matrix for the microorganisms. The seed cultures in the bioplugs are a mixture of microorganisms selected for their abilities to biodegrade the contaminants of concern... The bioplugs are strategically inserted into the contaminated zone(s). Liquids then flow through the plugs by a pressure gradient created using compressed air. This flow acts to accelerate the movement of ground or irrigation water through the immobilized bed; thereby, facilitating the mineralization of organics within the aqueous phase and the bulk generation of biomass which bleeds off the bed.

A type of biomass combustion burner in which a pile of fuel burns on the grates.

The boilers are fed wood fuel from the main fuel bin located adjacent to the boiler house. The boilers are the "pile burner" type, which burn wood in a large pile on the floor of a refractory lined furnace box. Combustion efficiency with this type of boiler is generally low but pile burners are simple and therefore relatively inexpensive. Low combustion efficiency also means that emissions such as particulates and carbon monoxide are relatively high. One notable advantage to these systems is that high moisture content fuels can be burned as well as "dirty" fuels containing debris.

Pile burner : Boilers incorporating a pile burning design find applications where the anticipated wood fuel has a high(up to 65%) relative moisture content, as is found in whole green tree chips, bark, and green mill residue. Grates serve to support the fuel, and underfire air flowing up through the grates provides oxygen for combustion, cools the grates, promotes turbulence in the fuel bed, and dries the fuel. The most common form of pile burning is the Dutch oven, which was used almost exclusively during the early part of the century(Guinn and Turner 1990).

The use of growing cells in suspension as biocatalysts is generally termed fermentation. Non-growing systems include the use of suspensions, cells retained within a semipermeable membrane, or cells immobilized in or on a solid support. Such immobilized cells may be used in a fixed bed, expanded bed, fluid bed or fully mixed system.... Although many so-called fermentation reactions are carried out under aerobic conditions, these are of little interest in the present context since, when oxygen is used as the terminal electron acceptor, the production of low molecular weight metabolites of the type required is restricted and a high proportion of the carbon in the feedstock is converted into cell biomass.
