The jigging cycle for coal may be represented as a sine wave... in which water velocity is plotted against time. Starting from rest, the water commences to rise through the closely packed bed of coal with increasing velocity. Then, as the pulsion stroke passes its peak, the velocity of the water lessens and the suction stroke begins.

Ce type de réacteur conviendrait à la mise en œuvre des réactions de pyrolyse éclair qui nécessitent un chauffage brutal des particules solides et une trempe rapide des produits gazeux pour obtenir des hydrocarbures non saturés.

Le procédé de chauffage de particules de bois en lit fluidisé avec solides ou gaz caloporteurs paraît le plus prometteur. Il se rapproche des procédés de gazéification que nous verrons dans le chapitre suivant. This is a fire of first importance--a fundamental fire used in many other lays and an unexcelled fire in itself. No arrangement of wood will burn so effectively, for none admits so much air to every stick from all directions. There are actually 3 types of the crisscross fire, but they do not have a specific name. However, the term "log cabin fire" has been used as a synonym for all three. But the term properly designates another type of fire. It is actually the beginning of a crisscross fire that does not have the logs stacked in the crisscross fashion over the tiny wigwam fire, but rather has them stacked around the wigwam fire log cabin style.

When it's time for bed, astronauts take their "sleep restraint"(sleeping bag) and snap it to one of the walls, floor, or ceiling-it doesn’t matter since there is no up or down in space. A sparge arm is another worthwhile brewery option. Although it does not actually save time, it does decrease the amount of effort you must spend pouring sparge water into the lauter tun. A sparge arm can be purchased ready-made, improvised from a shower head, or fabricated at home. One simple design is a perforated copper loop that lies on top of the grain in the lauter tun. It is connected to the hot liquor tank by food-grade tubing, and you control the flow of water from the hot liquor tank using a ball valve. Water is run through the copper loop onto the grain bed at a rate about equal to the rate of wort leaving the tun.

Where the enzyme is expensive then the extra cost of immobilization, with its attendant promise of catalyst re-use, may be less than the cost of continually adding more enzyme to the reaction system. Thus the criterion of re-use of enzyme is important; so too is the stability of the immobilized enzyme in relation to the average residence time of substrate within the reactor. In order to obtain a high yield of product a balance must be struck between flow rate, reactor volume, and enzymic activity. High flow rates and small reactor volumes will give a small residence time and thus, for high product yield, will require a highly active enzyme preparation. Increasing the reactor volume will increase the residence time but will, at least in the case of the packed bed reactor, increase the quantity of immobilized enzyme required and thus the cost of the process.

OBS

In an idealized reactor, all the fluid elements would spend the same time in the reactor. But in most real reactor systems, there would be a distribution of residence times of different fluid elements due to nonideal flow characteristics. Thus, space time is a parameter which describes only the macroscopic flow behavior.

Le réacteur à lit fixe [...] se présente sous forme d'une colonne garnie par un lit fixe d'enzymes immobilisées. On peut l'alimenter soit à flux descendant, soit à flux ascendant. Dans le cas idéal, toutes les molécules traversent le réacteur à la même vitesse et y séjournent donc pendant le même temps. On dit alors que l'on a un écoulement piston. Dans la réalité, il y a un certain échange de matière par diffusion, ce qui se traduit par l'apparition d'une distribution des temps de séjour.
