Since the beginning of our French colony, the habitants of New France created a rowdy tradition of getting together just before Lent to eat, drink and be merry. At this time, this intense period of revelry was already designated as the Carnival-a word of Italian origin meaning Mardi Gras. The custom of celebrating from the end of January until mid-February has long been popular. The first large winter Carnival in Québec City, the world's snow capital, took place in 1894. Often faced with winter's hardships, the city's population reinvented this popular tradition with a winter celebration that warmed up the hearts of all of it revellers. Interrupted by two wars, then the economic crisis of 1929, the Carnival was held sporadically until the second half of the century. In 1954, in the context of the economic development of the Old Capital, a group of business people relaunched the festivities. That year, Bonhomme was born and elected the event's representative. The first official edition of the Québec Winter Carnival took place in 1955. The Carnival snowballed into an undeniable manifestation for the entire Québec City population, and was an important vehicle for tourism and economical activity in the city.

La première édition du Carnaval d'hiver de Québec a lieu en 1955. Le Carnaval de Québec devient alors une manifestation incontournable pour la population de Québec, et un moteur de l'activité touristique hivernale de la ville.

Les anciens anneaux ne comportaient que quelques lignes de lumière, ceux de la troisième génération en comptent plusieurs dizaines régulièrement réparties autour de l’anneau. Il y règne le vide de l’anneau (sans fenêtre physique) pour les rayonnements mous tandis que le vide des lignes pour les rayons X durs qui sont peu absorbés est moins poussé et des fenêtres isolant le vide des lignes de celui de l’anneau (en général en béryllium) peuvent être traversées.

The 12-hour clock is a time conversion convention in which the 24 hours of the day are divided into two periods called “ante meridiem”(“a. m., ” English :"before mid day") and “post meridiem”(“p. m., ” English :"after mid day"). Each period consists of 12 hours numbered : 12(acting as zero), 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. … Confusion at noon and midnight.... The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, states : To avoid confusion, the correct designation for twelve o’clock is 12 noon or 12 midnight. Alternatively, the twenty-four-hour-clock system may be used. … In the United States, noon is often called "12 : 00 p. m. "and midnight "12 : 00 a. m. "With this convention, thinking of "12" as "0" makes the system logical. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language(Fourth Edition, 2000) has a similar usage note on this topic :"Strictly speaking, 12 a. m. denotes midnight, and 12 p. m. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required. "Many U. S. style guides(including the NIST website) recommend that it is clearest if one refers to "noon" or "12 : 00 noon" and "midnight" or "12 : 00 midnight"(rather than to "12 : 00 p. m. "and "12 : 00 a. m. The Cup Counter Anemometer gives direct indication of run of wind on a mechanical counter.... Munro Cup Counter Anemometer... is used at many agrometeorological stations in hot climates to indicate the run of wind at 2 m above ground level and for estimating potential evapotranspiration. The three conical cups rotate the spindle at a speed proportional to linear wind speed and the motion is transmitted, via a worm gear, to a six-digit mechanical counter which indicates in mph, knots or km/h. Average run of wind over any chosen period of time can be calculated by noting counter readings at the beginning and end of the cycle.

The Cup Counter Anemometer is a passive instrument that indicates the total run of wind past the observation point via a mechanical counter. The observation window to the mechanical counter is inclined to allow easy reading from below.
