Using their siphons, the invasive zebra and quagga mussels have dramatically changed the Great Lakes by shifting primary production out of the water column and into the bottom, benthic zone. As a result, there is an increase in invertebrate fish food for bottom feeders. Environmental Effects Monitoring(EEM) is a scientific tool that assesses the effects of effluent from industrial or other sources on fish, fish habitat and the human use of fisheries resources. Information form EEM, taken together with social, economic and technical considerations, may be used to assess the adequacy of the regulations in protecting aquatic environments and to ensure proper management, conservation and protection of aquatic environments. EEM is not just an end-of-pipe measurement of the concentrations of various contaminants in effluent. Il s'agit d'un outil scientifique qui permet d'évaluer les effets des effluents de sources industrielles ou autres sur les poissons et leur habitat ainsi que les effets de l'usage humain des ressources halieutiques. Combinés avec certains facteurs sociaux, économiques et techniques, les renseignements de l'ESEE peuvent servir à évaluer dans quelle mesure la réglementation protège les milieux aquatiques et à veiller sur la gestion, la conservation et la protection adéquates de ceux-ci. L'ESEE n'est pas uniquement une mesure, prise à un point de rejet, des concentrations de différents contaminants présents dans les effluents.
