A cloud chamber containing air supersaturated with water vapor by sudden expansion, in which rapidly moving nuclear particles such as alpha or beta rays produced ionization tracks by condensation of vapor on the ions produced by the rays.

Cloud chambers were first developed by Charles T.R. Wilson around 1911 for experiments on the formation of rain clouds. Wilson knew that water vapour condensed around ions, atoms which have become charged by gaining or losing electrons. However, an alpha particle, for example, which had an electric charge, would leave a trail of ions as it passed through a gas. If water vapour condensed on these ions, the track of the alpha particle would become visible as a line of water droplets.

There are two basic types of cloud chambers in use today; (1) the expansion chamber ... which depends upon expansion of the air, within the chamber, to cool it and thus create a supersaturated atmosphere, and (2) the continuous or diffusion type chamber ..., that creates a supersaturated atmosphere by diffusion of vapor from the warm upper region of the chamber to the cooled bottom of the chamber. In both types, electrically charged ions created by nuclear particles colliding with atoms within the chamber atmosphere, serve as nuclei of condensation.

Les radiations corpusculaires sont constituées par le mouvement de particules (électrons, protons, neutrons, noyaux) animées de vitesses qui peuvent être très grandes, mais toujours inférieures à la vitesse de la lumière dans le vide.

Its unstable atomic nucleus undergoes radioactive decay and emits alpha, beta or gamma rays. Most isotopes however are emitters of gamma rays only. Since a radioisotope is a specific type of radioactive substance, radioisotope scanning is specific with respect to radioactive scanning(in French, scintigraphie).

The method by which incident radiation interacts with the medium to cause ionization may be direct or indirect. Electromagnetic radiations (X rays and gamma photons) are indirectly ionizing; that is, they give up their energy in various interactions with cellular molecules, and the energy is then utilized to produce a fast-moving charged particle such as an electron. It is the electron that then secondarily may react with a target molecule. Charged particles, in contrast, strike the tissue or medium and directly react with target molecules, such as oxygen or water. These particulate radiations are directly ionizing radiations.

The third step is to fuse two tritium nuclei into one helium and two proton products. The end result of fusing four hydrogen nuclei (protons) is one helium nucleus, and two gamma ray photons, and two electron neutrinos, and kinetic heat energy.

BETA rays have been selected for monitoring from all the different types of radiation(the simultaneous checking of all of which would require costly and complicated equipment) because BETA rays are harmful in themselves and are emitted by most radioactive substances. Various types of equipment are available on the market : concentration by evaporation, immersed probes large surface area counters, etc.
