A Turk’s head knot is a decorative knot with a basket weave pattern surrounding a cylinder shaped object. The name is used to describe the general family of all such knots rather than one individual knot. The most common use for the Turk’s head is to mark the "king spoke" of a vessel’s wheel; when this spoke is upright the rudder is in a central position. Otherwise, the knot is used mostly for decoration, and occasionally as anti-chafing protection. The number of leads of a Turk’s head is the number of crossings it makes as it goes around the circumference of the cylinder. The number of bends is the number of strands along the long axis of the cylinder. Depending on the number of leads and bends, a Turk’s head may be tied using a single strand or multiple strands. Mathematically, the number of strands is the greatest common divisor of the number of leads and the number of bends; the knot may be tied with a single strand if and only if the two numbers are coprime. In making a Spanish windlass, fasten a rope between the load you are to move and an anchorage some distance away. Place a short spar vertically beside this rope, about halfway between the anchorage and the load. This spar may be a pipe or a pole, but in either case it should have as large a diameter as possible. Make a loop in the rope and wrap it partly around the spar. Insert the end of a horizontal rod through this loop. The horizontal rod should be a stout pipe or bar long enough to provide leverage. It is used as a lever to turn the vertical spar. As the vertical spar turns, the rope is wound around it, which shortens the line and pulls on the load. As the name implies, the carabiner brake rappel is a rappel technique which uses a series of carabiners to produce the friction necessary for braking during a descent. One advantage of using this method is that there is no friction between the rope and the climber's body. The system requires two carabiners, arranged with their gates opposed, to form the platform, or base of the brake. The platform is attached to the harness or diaper sling using a carabiner(s). The braking carabiner(s), positioned across the platform carabiners and beneath the rope loop produce the necessary friction through their contact with the bight of the rope.
