The creation of a BPD [biliopancreatic diversion] necessarily requires an alternation of the normal GI [gastrointestinal] continuity. The biliopancreatic limb, also known as the afferent limb, consists of the duodenum and proximal jejunum that remains in continuity with the remnant stomach proximally. The limb contains digestive enzymes from the stomach, hepatobiliary tract, and pancreas. Biliopancreatic diversion is primarily a malabsorptive procedure. The standard procedure involves the removal of part of the stomach(a limited horizontal gastrectomy) to limit oral intake and induce weight loss. The gastric pouch that is created is larger than that of gastric bypass or the restrictive procedures, therefore allowing larger meals, and patients remain on a less restricted diet than would the case following gastric bypass. A Roux limb may be formed in multiple different gastrointestinal surgeries, including bariatric surgery, e. g. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [and] biliopancreatic diversion... In these procedures, the small bowel is divided at some point. This leaves two components of small bowel : a proximal component connected to the stomach, pancreas, and biliary system [and] a distal component connected to the terminal ileum and colon. The end of the distal component is dragged up and connected(anastomosed) to the remnant stomach... This is the Roux limb.
