The term microlithotype was developed to permit the designation of rock types within coal that are at a microscopic scale and their definition is based on maceral percentages. All macerals have a suffix "-inite" and microlithotypes have the suffix "-ite. "Thus, layers greater than 0. 05 mm in thickness and consisting of greater than 95% vitrinite are termed vitrite. Bimaceral(clarite, durite and vitrinertite) and trimaceral(duroclarite and clarodurite) microlithotypes have names that are derived from lithotypes rather than macerals. 3, fiche 1, Anglais, - durite

At the microscopic level, the associations of coal macerals are named microlithotypes. They have been classified into three main groups : monomaceral, bimaceral and trimaceral according to whether a microlithotype contains one, two or three maceral groups. The monomaceral microlithotypes "vitrite", "liptite" or "fusite" must contain not less than 95% vitrinite, liptinite or inertinite and not more than 5% other maceral groups, respectively. 3, fiche 2, Anglais, - monomaceral
