The guns, so-called, are pressure vessels about 6 in. in diameter and 30 in. long. They are provided with a steam inlet, a bleed-off valve, and a means for heating the gun-usually by a gas flame. A charge of pellets [made from cereals] at 11 to 12% moisture is dropped into the open end of the gun from a gravity chute leading from the storage bins on the floor above. The end of the gun is sealed by a trip-valve. All valves are closed, sealing the gun. If the gun is heated by gas flames, it is slowly rotated while the temperature, and consequently the pressure, is slowly built up. The temperature may reach 500 to 800 degrees F, and the pressure at the end point may be 100 to 200 psi.... When the pressure reaches the necessary level, the end of the gun is suddenly opened by a trigger mechanism. The boilers are fed wood fuel from the main fuel bin located adjacent to the boiler house. The boilers are the "pile burner" type, which burn wood in a large pile on the floor of a refractory lined furnace box. Combustion efficiency with this type of boiler is generally low but pile burners are simple and therefore relatively inexpensive. Low combustion efficiency also means that emissions such as particulates and carbon monoxide are relatively high. The batch-in-bin drying process involves using a bin as a batch dryer. A 3 to 4-foot deep layer of grain is placed in the bin and the fan and heater started. Typical drying air temperatures are 120 to 160F with airflow rates of 8 to 15 cfm/bushel. Drying begins at the floor and progresses upward. Grain at the floor of the bin becomes excessively dry while the top layer of the batch remains fairly wet. The grain is cooled in the bin after it is dried. Some batch-in-bin dryers hold the grain being dried in a layer near the roof. After the grain is dried it is dropped to the bin floor where it is cooled.
