BLOWER CASING [5 fiches]

Fiche 1 1990-01-08

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Ovens, Furnaces and Boilers (Heating)
DEF

High-boy arrangement with down-flow of air, in which the blower is heated at the top of the casing and the heat exchanger is located below the blower. Used mainly for first-story installation in which warm air is discharged downward.

Anglais

Subject field(s)

CONT

The upflow or high-boy furnace has the blower beneath the heat exchanger discharging vertically upward. Air enters through the bottom or the side of the blower compartment and leaves at the top. Such furnaces may be used in closets and utility rooms on the first floor of homes or in basements with the return air ducted down to the blower compartment entrance.

CONT

The three basic types [of forced air furnace] are upflow, counter flow and horizontal, and there are several variations depending on the actual installation.... The highboy (upflow) furnace is used primarily in single-level homes when the ducts are placed in the attic. This may be because of the slab on grade construction or because there is limited crawl space. The furnace may be located in a closet or recessed area in the wall. The air enters the furnace through a low side entry or through the bottom, and it leaves through the top.

OBS

Among the principal types [of forced-air furnaces] used for residences and small buildings the following arrangements are common :... High-boy arrangement with up-flow of air, in which the blower is located at the bottom of the casing and the heat exchanger is located at the top.... High-boy arrangement with down-flow of air, in which the blower is located at the top of the casing and the heat exchanger is located below the blower.

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Cooling and Ventilating Systems
  • HVAC Distribution Systems
OBS

propeller fan : An axial-flow blower, with or without a casing, using a propeller-type rotor to accelerate the fluid.

OBS

Propeller fan, Axial flow fan: A fan in which air enters and leaves the impeller in a direction substantially parallel to its axis.

OBS

CONT

Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house.
