The [continuous extrusion blow-molding] process has three subcategories : the rising mold method, the rotary method, and the shuttle method. In the rising mold method, the parison is continuously extruded directly above the mold cavity. When it is at the proper length, the mold rises quickly to capture the parison and returns downward to the blow station. After blowing the bottle, the mold opens, the part is removed, and the process repeats.

Several [internal cooling] systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods.... The super-cold air system with water vapor works much the same way [as the liquified gas system]. Here, very dry, subzero blowing air expands the parison. The expanded air is allowed to circulate through the bottle and exhaust. Immediately after the parison has expanded, a fine mist of water is injected into the cold air stream. As it flows, the water mist turns into snow. As the snow circulates through the container, it melts and then vaporizes. At the end of the molding cycle, the water mist is stopped, permitting the circulating air to purge and dry the interior before the mold is opened and the part is removed. Production rates can be improved as much as 50%.

Les gouttelettes vont ensuite s'échauffer puis se vaporiser en absorbant la chaleur du corps creux équivalant à l'enthalpie de vaporisation de l'eau. La réduction du temps de refroidissement par ce procédé peut atteindre 50%. Comme le balayage au CO2, ce procédé s'avère intéressant pour des corps creux à parois relativement épaisses (plus de 0,5 mm). d) Procédé ALEX. [...]

Other blow molding operations.... Fluorination surface treatment is a process to improve the gas barrier of polyethylene to nonpolar solvents. A barrier is created by the chemical reaction of the fluorine and the polyethylene, which form a thin(20-40 nm) fluorocarbon layer on the bottle surface. Two systems are available for creating the layer. The "in-process" system uses fluorine as a part of the parison expand gas in the blowing operation. The "post-treatment" system requires bottles to be placed in an enclosed chamber filled with fluorine gas. The method forms a barrier layer on both the inside and outside surfaces. This surface treatment allows low-cost, blow-molded polyethylene bottles to be used for paint, paint thinner, lighter fluid, polishes, cleaning solvents, cosmetics, and toiletries. The approach can replace other higher cost resins or coextrusion processes.

The preform mold consists of four major components: preform cavity, injection nozzle, neckring insert, and core rod assembly.

The core rod assembly... has four functions or features : It forms the interior of the preform. It supports the parison or the bottle during transfer. It is the valve where air enters to expand the parison. The valve is located either in the shoulder area or in the tip, the location being governed by the bottle or core rod length-to-diameter ratio. Wide mouth bottles(that is, core rods with low length-to-diameter ratios) will usually have a shoulder valve. The core rod has a "blow by" groove. This annular groove, located near the seating shank... is needed to seal the parison and prevent excessive air loss during bottle blowing and to eliminate elastic retraction of the parison during the transfer between cavities.

Even though the parison is exposed to the air, melt strength is not as crucial because of the support provided by the parison core rod.

Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends.

Intermittent extrusion is the second basic extrusion blow-molding category. In this process the parison is quickly extruded after the bottle is removed from the mold. The mold clamping mechanism does not need to transfer to a blowing station. Blow molding, cooling, and part removal all take place under the extrusion head, which also allows the clamping system to be more simple and rugged. The stop/start aspect of the extrusion method makes this process more suitable for polyolefin and other materials that are not heat-sensitive.
