The clinician lifts the patient's symptomatic leg by the posterior ankle while keeping the knee in a fully extended position. The clinician continues to lift the patient's leg by flexing at the hip until pain is illicited or end range is reached. Neurologic pain which is reproduced in the leg and low back between 30-70 degrees of hip flexion is a positive result of lumbar disc herniation at the L4-S1 nerve roots. In order to make this test more specific, the ankle can be dorsiflexed and the cervical spine flexed. This increases the stretching of the nerve root and dura.

A measure of cervical spine flexion. The patient is instructed to nod the head forward bringing the chin down, and then instructed to touch the chin to the breast bone. The mouth must be closed during these measurements. Normal response is to touch the sternum with the chin. If the patient is unable to do this, the distance between the sternum and the chin should be measured in centimeters to the nearest 0. 1 cm. Rheumatic diseases limiting the range of cervical flexion include : degenerative spondylosis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and Forestiers's disease.

A case-control study was undertaken nested in a cohort of 208 patients with invasive cervical carcinoma in Montreal.

In the largest cohort of nearly 7000 workers who were exposed to unspecified cadmium compounds (Armstrong and Kazantzis, 1983; Kazantzis et al., 1988), there again was excess mortality from lung cancer with increasing intensity of exposure, but the increase could not be accounted for by cumulative exposure to cadmium. Rather, based on a nested case-control study, it was associated with the estimated cumulative exposure to arsenic or lead (Ades and Kazantzis, 1988).

Continual hyperabduction of the arm may cause another variety(hyperabductions). Arterial compression leads to ischemia, paresthesias, numbness, and weakness of the affected arm, sometimes with Raynaud's phenomenon of the arm. Nerve compression causes atrophy and weakness of the muscles of the hand and, in advanced cases, of the forearm, with pain and sensory disturbances in the arm. Venous obstruction usually takes the form of the Paget-Schroetter syndrome.

LBC is a new method of cervical cell sample preparation. Samples are collected [in a similar way to the standard Pap smear], but using a brush-like device rather than a spatula. The head of the device is rinsed or broken off into a vial of preservative fluid so that most or all of the cervical cells are retained. Samples are transported to the laboratory where they are mixed to disperse the cells. Cellular debris, such as blood or mucus, is removed and a thin layer of cervical cells is deposited on a microscope slide, which is then stained.
