Parent material, in soil science, means the underlying geological material(generally bedrock or a superficial or drift deposit) in which soil horizons form. Soils typically get a great deal of structure and minerals from their parent material. Parent materials are made up of consolidated or unconsolidated mineral material that has undergone some degree of physical or chemical weathering.... Parent material is classified by its last means of transport. So material that was transported to a location by glacier, then deposited elsewhere by streams, that material is classified as stream transported parent material, or fluvial parent material. Glacial till refers to material dragged with a moving ice sheet. Because it is not transported with liquid water, the material is not sorted by size. 3, fiche 5, Anglais, - parent%20material

The rock from which soil is formed is called parent material. The main types are: eolian, glacial till, glacial outwash, alluvium, lacustrine parent material and residual parent material, or bedrock. Pedologist uses the following formula for understanding soil formation: s = f (cl, o, r, p, t, ...) where s - soil properties; cl - regional climate; o - potential biota, r - topography; p - parent material; t - time; ... - additional variables. 4, fiche 5, Anglais, - parent%20material

The rate of a heterogenous enzymic reaction is attenuated by the relative slowness of the substrate diffusion to the enzyme. By analogy to the well established chemical action of inhibitors, this phenomenon can be referred to as "diffusional inhibition". In the chemical engineering literature the effect of diffusional limitations on the catalyst activity is quantitatively expressed by the effectiveness factor, [eta], which measures the departure of V from Vkin and is defined by the following relationship : V=[eta] Vkin. Thus, the magnitude of diffusional inhibition is conveniently expressed by the reciprocal of the effectiveness factor, which is a complex function of the kinetic parameters, transport coefficient, and substrate concentration. 3, fiche 7, Anglais, - effectiveness%20factor

Air pollutants occur both outdoors or indoors, and can be natural or man-made.... Typical urban air pollutants from man-made activities include nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter.... Common sources of these primary pollutants include power station and industrial plants... and road transport... Ozone is a secondary pollutant, formed in the air as a result of chemical reactions.... Common indoor air pollutants include carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide from faulty gas heaters and cookers, carbon monoxide and benzene from cigarette smoke, and volatile organic compounds(VOCs) from synthetic furnishings, vinyl flooring and paints. In addition, there are biological pollutants such as dust mites and mould. 5, fiche 10, Anglais, - air%20quality%20sensor

ICCE is one of the commissions of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences(IAHS). The field of interest of ICCE may be broadly defined as including the erosion, transport and deposition of sediment and the interaction of these processes with other components of the environment and with water resource development. The Commission is principally concerned with promoting improved understanding of erosion and sedimentation processes, primarily as they relate to hydrology and fluvial geomorphology, and including both mechanical and chemical denudation. It also aims to promote the study of global patterns of erosion and sediment yield and their controls and the impact of human activity on erosion and sedimentation and to encourage the development and application of new methods for investigating erosion and sediment delivery, including the use of environmental radionuclides as sediment tracers, and the implementation of novel modelling techniques. 1, fiche 19, Anglais, - International%20Commission%20on%20Continental%20Erosion

Untreated extruded polyethylene film of 200 gauge [2 mils(0. 05 mm) thick] is the most popular carrier film because of its more favorable cost. Additional information on both spatial(geographic) and temporal patterns in the chemical alteration of rainfall and snowfall will be presented in the Phase II report... Also shown was a geographic pattern of decreasing sulphate loadings to the east and north, which was consistent with an assumption of long-distance transport of pollutants from urban centres. 1, fiche 33, Anglais, - spatial%20pattern

Wet deposition processes include gas and aerosol scavenging within and below clouds(i. e., nucleation, turbulent mixing, molecular diffusion, dissolution, impaction, and other phoretic processes). Dry deposition processes may go on all the time. These include the sedimentation of particles larger than ca 10 um under the influence of gravity; the turbulent transport of small particles and gases to the near-surface region, Brownian and other diffusive transport through the near-surface elements, and sorption or chemical reaction at the surface. 1, fiche 34, Anglais, - diffusive%20transport
