The sculpture--the first on the Hill to honour Canadian women--will depict Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby, known popularly as the "Famous Five".

The larger-than-life sculpture by Edmonton artist Barbara Paterson shows the five women celebrating their milestone legal victory in characteristic poses. An empty chair is part of the work -- an interactive feature that invites passers-by to join the group. There [were] two sculptures produced. The first [was] unveiled in Calgary in October 1999, to mark the 70th anniversary of the "persons" declaration. An identical copy [was] unveiled on Parliament Hill in the fall of 2000.

This celebration would be used to commemorate the creation of the IOC on 23 June 1894 in Paris. Olympic Day was held for the first time on 23 June 1948 with a total 9 National Olympic Committees(NOCs) hosting ceremonies in their respective countries : Austria, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Switzerland, Uruguay and Venezuela. The first Olympic Day Run was held in 1987.

The Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival is a multi-day festival celebrated jointly by the cities of Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario to commemorate each country's respective National Day(US Independence Day on July 4 and Canada Day on July 1). It is organized by the Parade Company, a not for profit organization governed by the Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation. It has a long list of sponsors. The celebration draws large crowds of around a million people. Traditionally, several days of events planned, ending with one of the world's largest fireworks displays, sponsored by Target. On the Windsor side, there is a midway consisting of carnival rides and concessions during the festival.

L'Expo '98 ou l'exposition universelle 1998 a eu lieu du 22 mai au 30 septembre 1998. Elle s'est tenue à Lisbonne (Portugal) et avait pour thème : «les océans, un patrimoine pour le futur». Cette exposition a eu lieu à l'est de la capitale portugaise, au bord du Tage, à quelques kilomètres du centre ville, quartier d'Olivais, sur une ancienne zone industrielle rasée, réhabilitée, et renommée Parc des Nations à cette occasion. Australia and New Zealand commemorate the ANZAC Day public holiday on April 25 every year to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps(ANZAC), and of all those who served their country. ANZAC Day is also a public holiday in Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga. The ANZAC tradition began in World War I with a landing on 25 April, 1915 near Gallipoli on the Turkish Aegean coast. Because of a navigational error, the ANZACs came ashore about a mile north of the intended landing point. Instead of facing the expected beach and gentle slope they found themselves at the bottom of steep cliffs, offering the few Turkish defenders an ideal defensive position. Establishing a foothold, the Anzacs found an advance to be impossible. After eight months of stalemate the Allies withdrew, leaving 10, 000 dead amongst the ANZACs and over 33, 000 British dead.

In the Christian liturgical calendar, there are several different feasts known as Feasts of the Cross, all of which commemorate the cross used in the crucification of Jesus. The original name of this feast was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, by which name it is still known by the Orthodox Church and the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church. Since 1970, it has been officially called the Triumph of the Cross by the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. It is also popularly known among Anglicans and Lutherans as Holy Cross Day. In Jewish folklore the feast was established by Saint Peter for converted pagans to observe instead of Rosh Hashana. The feast commemorates the finding of the True Cross in 325 during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem of St. Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, who made Christianity the state religion of the empire after having converted to the faith himself. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a part of the cross placed inside it. In 614, the part of the cross was carried away from the church by the Persians, and remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. The cross was returned to the church the following year after initially having been taken to Constantinople by Heraclius.

This feast is celebrated in the Latin Church on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday to solemnly commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The instrument in the hand of Divine Providence was St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon, in Belgium. She was born in 1193 at Retines near Liège. Orphaned at an early age, she was educated by the Augustinian nuns of Mont Cornillon. Here she in time made her religious profession and later became superioress. Intrigues of various kinds several times drove her from her convent. She died 5 April, 1258, at the House of the Cistercian nuns at Fosses, and was buried at Villiers. Juliana, from her early youth, had a great veneration for the Blessed Sacrement, and always longed for a special feast in its honour. This desire is said to have been increased by a vision of the Church under the appearance of the full moon having one dark spot, which signified the absence of such a solemnity. She made known her ideas to Robert de Thorete, then Bishop of Liège, to the learned Dominican Hugh, later cardinal legate in the Netherlands, and to Jacques Pantaléon, at that time Archedeacon of Liège, afterwards Bishop of Verdun, Patriarch of Jerusalem and finally Pope Urban IV.

Earth Day Canada campaign. In the first year of this annual campaign, over two million Canadians will wear a green ribbon to commemorate Earth Day. Sponsorship and donations created by the campaign will be used to create much needed manuals and resources for community tree planting projects. One of the most popular Earth Day events, tree planting is an environmental action in itself. It is also a symbolic act that commemorates and reaffirms our environmental commitment.
