During the International Year of Volunteers 2001, Human Resources Development Canada announced the launch of the Thérèse Casgrain Volunteer Award. Wildlife ’87 was officially launched in December 1986 by the Minister for Environment Canada. Its goal was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first wildlife sanctuary established in North America at Last Mountain Lake, Saskatchewan on June 8, 1887. In January 1948 at the 42nd IOC in St Moritz, Switzerland, the International Olympic Committee(IOC) approved the idea of Olympic Day. This celebration would be used to commemorate the creation of the IOC on 23 June 1894 in Paris. Olympic Day was held for the first time on 23 June 1948 with a total 9 National Olympic Committees(NOCs) hosting ceremonies in their respective countries : Austria, Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Switzerland, Uruguay and Venezuela. In an effort to encourage all NOCs to commemorate and celebrate Olympic Day, the IOC Sport for all Commission launched the Olympic Day Run concept with the objective of promoting the practice of participation in sport by men, women and children from all corners of the world and all walks of life, regardless of athletic ability. The Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival is a multi-day festival celebrated jointly by the cities of Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario to commemorate each country's respective National Day(US Independence Day on July 4 and Canada Day on July 1). It is organized by the Parade Company, a not for profit organization governed by the Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation. It has a long list of sponsors. The celebration draws large crowds of around a million people. Traditionally, several days of events planned, ending with one of the world's largest fireworks displays, sponsored by Target. Earth Day Canada campaign. In the first year of this annual campaign, over two million Canadians will wear a green ribbon to commemorate Earth Day. Sponsorship and donations created by the campaign will be used to create much needed manuals and resources for community tree planting projects.
