The Sherman Antitrust Act(Sherman Act), July 2, 1890, ch. 647, 26 Stat. 209, 15 U. S. C. & I was the first United States Federal statute to limit cartels and monopolies. It falls under antitrust law. The Act provides :"Every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal". The Act also provides :"Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations, shall be deemed guilty of a felony... "The Act put responsibility upon government attorneys and district courts to pursue and investigate trusts, companies and organizations suspected of violating the Act.

L'expression d'"anti-trust" vient du fait que la proposition de loi visait à contrer les agissements d'un groupe pétrolier, la Standard Oil, qui était constitué en "trust" et non sous la forme d'une société dont les droits étaient, à l'époque, limités. Ironiquement, lorsque la Standard Oil fut démantelée, elle avait pris déjà la forme d'une société et le Sherman Antitrust Act ne s'appliqua plus guère aux trusts.

Originally the idea of the late U. S. Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown, the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue(TABD) was conceived to promote closer commercial ties between the U. S. and European Union. Brown, together with his counterparts in the European Commission, Martin Bangemann and Sir Leon Brittan, created the dialogue system as a mechanism to encourage public and civil society input to fostering a more closely integrated transatlantic marketplace. The dialogue system, which includes separate dialogues for consumers, environment and business, was a key part of the governments’ 1995 New Transatlantic Agenda(NTA), which laid out a plan to enhance overall transatlantic economic and political relations. The TABD's goal is to help establish a Barrier-Free Transatlantic Market which will serve as a catalyst for global trade liberalisation and prosperity. Unified markets are needed to create a business environment which will stimulate innovation and economic growth, more investment and create new jobs.

The ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation has a rich and interesting history. It began in 1935, when the mandate of the ministère des Affaires municipales was broadened to include industry and trade, two sectors of increasing importance to the government. In 1943, the ministère de l'Industrie et du Commerce was founded. Over the years, other mandates were grafted onto its mission : technology in 1988, science in 1994, and external trade in 1996. In 1998, the science and technology mandates were entrusted to the ministère de la Recherche, de la Science et de la Technologie, which, in its early days, was charged with devising a scientific policy to bring about a new convergence between universities, industry and government. In 1998, the ministère des Régions was created as a successor to the Secrétariat au développement des régions in order to implement the new policy to support local and regional development, with a view to promoting and assisting the development of the regions and ensuring consistent government action. On April 29, 2003, the Premier announced the creation of the ministère du Développement économique et régional(MDER) out of these four entities. The purpose of the merger was to improve intervention targeting regional businesses and stakeholders by simplifying it and making it more coherent and efficient. In April 2004, "Recherche" was added to the MDER's name. In February 2005, the MDERR was divided into three departments : the ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation; the ministère du Tourisme; and the ministère des Affaires municipales et des Régions.

L'objectif de ce regroupement est de permettre des interventions plus simples, plus cohérentes et plus efficaces auprès des entreprises et des intervenants régionaux. En avril 2004, le nom du Ministère s'enrichit du vocable « Recherche ». En février 2005, le MDERR se scinde en trois ministères : le ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation, le ministère du Tourisme et celui des Affaires municipales et des Régions.

The Milton Chamber of Commerce was initiated as the Milton Board of Trade well over 100 years ago on October 2, 1888. Early meetings of the Board of Trade were held in Chisholm's Hall(about 144 Main St.) on the first Friday evening of each month "when the interests of the town were fully discussed and well looked after". The Board of Trade changed its name to the Milton Chamber of Commerce in 1952 and in 1965 received its provincial charter. Trade fairs, the Santa Claus parade, paint-up, clean-up, beautify campaigns and others were some activities of the Chamber of Commerce and its committees.
