The first clue to the shape of the Milky Way comes from the bright band of stars that stretches across the sky... This band of stars can be seen with the naked eye in places with dark night skies. The inner, visible part of the halo, which has roughly the same diameter as the galactic disk, is occupied by Population II objects, including globular clusters and old, individual stars. Beyond this is a much larger region, called the dark halo or extended halo, containing large amounts of dark matter, the presence of which is revealed by its gravitational effect on the galaxy's rotation. A young star is apparently blasting high-speed gas jets from its poles, carving a void through the dense molecular cloud that was its birthplace, according to an international team of astronomers.... The timing of stellar birth phases depends a lot on the star's environment.
