A board or paper machine comprising one open-ended cylinder, or several open-ended cylinders in series, each covered with fine mesh wire and revolving partially immersed in a trough or vat of stock. Water draining through the wire leaves a mat of fibres to form a web or a number of webs. The wet web or webs are then transferred sequentially to the underside of a moving felt applied at the top of the cylinder or cylinders. The resultant combined web then passes through pressing and drying sections.

Attention should now be directed to a "dryer pocket". Paper drying can best be visualized as a repetitive two-phase process. In phase 1, the sheet picks up sensible heat while in contact with the steam cylinder. In phase 2, the sheet flashes off steam in the open draw between the top and bottom cylinders, thus causing the sheet to spontaneously cool and become ready to pick up sensible heat again.

[A] machine used for washing wool after carding to remove all impurities [and to dry] the tops after washing by passing them over steam-heated cylinders, or perforated cylinders through which hot air is forced.

This machine usually consists of two small washing or scouring tanks, drying cylinders, and a straightening gill-box. It is made in several forms, for each type certain constructional advantages or advantages for the material treated being claimed. It is employed either before or after combing to thoroughly clean worsted slivers or "tops, "for not only does the wool become sullied in passing through the several preparing machines, but impurities which cannot be extracted in the scouring bowls have revealed themselves and may here be conveniently got rid of. The process of "blueing" to give a white appearance to the slivers or tops is frequently resorted to, and is usually affected on the backwasher. The latest innovation in this machine is the adoption of hot air drying in place of cylinder drying.

The typical flexographic press consists of an ink tray filled with a thin, rapidly drying ink that is transferred by a fountain roller to an anilox roller, a doctor blade then removes the surplus ink leaving ink in the recessed cells which is then transferred to the plate cylinder. The substrate picks up the ink from the plate cylinder, and is held in position by the impression cylinder.

Print density(one measure of printability) is the optical contrast between the printed and unprinted surface... A higher ink application also has the effect of increasing set-off and rub-off. Set-off occurs when the still-moist ink smears off on the backing cylinder of the next printing unit, which then sets off the image onto the next page. Rub-off is when the ink rubs off on the reader's hands. These phenomena are related to the printing process used, and are caused by too-slow penetration of the ink into the paper or by inadequate drying.

A paper machine using one large steam-heated drying cylinder for drying the sheet instead of many smaller ones. The wet sheet is pressed against the surface of the Yankee dryer and may be held in place by a dryer felt as the dryer revolves. It produces a glossy(Machine glazed) finish on the side of the sheet next to the dryer. The machine may have a cylinder or a fourdrinier wet end and may have any number of presses or auxiliary dryers of the usual type.

High-velocity convective hoods placed over conventional steam cylinders are a popular method of drying single-sided coatings. Tunnel-drying is another approach, suitable for both single-and double-coated sheets. In this method, the air temperature is controlled to suit the drying requirements and speed of the machine, while the paper is carried through the tunnel on rollers, supported on foils, or held up by air-impingement.

On sèche très couramment les couchés simple face au moyen de cylindres classiques chauffés à la vapeur et surmontés par une hotte où l'air convectif circule à grande vitesse. Le séchage en tunnel est une autre méthode qui s'adapte aussi bien aux couchés simple face qu'aux couchés double face. Dans ce cas, le papier est soutenu par des rouleaux, supporté par des racles ou aéroporté. On règle la température dans le tunnel en fonction des besoins du séchage et de la vitesse de la machine.

Wood is fed continuously through a vertical cylinder into a retort. There, it undergoes three different treatments, moving slowly down to the bottom of the retort. In the first, it is dried, in the second, the charcoal process takes place, and in the third, charcoal is cooled. For the drying stage, pyroligneous gases are removed from the carbonization zone and fanned to the drying zone where they burn with a controlled supply of air. For the cooling stage, gases are removed from under the carbonization stage, where tars have been cracked, and reinjected at the bottom of the retort after having crossed a water cooled system. The sufficiently cooled charcoal is extracted from the bottom of the retort. The level of raw material inside the retort is kept at the maximum height possible. The excess of gas(50%) is generally flared off but can be directed through a by-product recovery system as for the Sific process. The process is fully automated.

Le procédé Lambiotte représente sans doute la technique la plus perfectionnée de pyrolyse du bois. Il opère en continu avec circulation externe de gaz de chauffage [...] Les gaz, au contraire du procédé Reichert, circulent en montant à contre-courant du bois. Il y a une zone de séchage et préchauffage, une zone de carbonisation exothermique puis une zone de refroidissement. Les gaz qui s'échappent par le haut sont refroidis, condensés, lavés. Les calories du charbon de bois sont en partie récupérées et le bilan matière comme le bilan énergétique sont particulièrement bien calculés dans ce procédé. Il faut toutefois utiliser du bois bien sec pour consommer le minimum de chauffage et d'énergie électrique (ventilateurs).

Air Float Dryer.... principle of operation.... The pulp web is carried in a number of passes through a chamber in which heated air is used both for drying and for supporting the web. Capital and operating costs are similar to the steam cylinder system, but most pulp producers favor the air float dryer because it is easier to operate and maintain. In the earlier models of the air dryer, the pulp web is carried on mechanical conveyors and hot air is blown between the passes. The later designs incorporate true air impingement above and below the web; this principle provides much higher evaporation rates and eliminates the mechanical conveyor. Typically, the pulp web enters at the top, makes a number of horizontal passes turning around rollers at each end, and leaves at the bottom of the dryer at the opposite end.

Séchoir à feuille aéroportée. Le principe du séchoir à feuille aéroportée est illustré aux figures 9-56 à 9-59 inclusivement. La feuille de pâte effectue un certain nombre de passages à l'intérieur d'une enceinte dans laquelle l'air chauffé sert à la fois au séchage et au support de la feuille. Les coûts d'immobilisation et d'exploitation afférents sont à peu près semblables à ceux de la sécherie à cylindres sécheurs, mais la plupart des fabricants de pâte préfèrent le séchoir à feuille aéroportée en raison de sa plus grande simplicité d'exploitation et d'entretien. Dans les anciens modèles, la feuille est transportée par des convoyeurs mécaniques et l'air chaud est soufflé entre les feuilles. Quant aux modèles plus récents, l'air est soufflé au-dessus et en dessous de la feuille; ce principe permet d'obtenir des taux d'évaporation plus élevés et d'éliminer le convoyeur mécanique.
