The Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, built in 1964 to commemorate the centenary of the Charlottetown Conference(1-9 September 1864), was the inspiration behind the founding of the Charlottetown Summer Festival [often designated "Charlottetown Festival"]. Saint John, Canada's oldest incorporated city comes alive with colour and excitement as Festival by the Sea, one of Canada's foremost national performing arts festivals, presents seven days of sensational entertainment in celebration of Canada's rich culture and heritage. Festival by the Sea originated as the cultural component of the Canada Games in 1985. This event included many fine facilities devoted to the athletes but perhaps more importantly, created an environment where people came to believe and expect that Saint John could produce and support excellence. The Festival has been in continuous existence from 1945 to the present. It was originally known as the Ottawa Music Festival Association until 1985 when the Kiwanis Clubs of the National Capital Region assumed shared responsibility with non-Kiwanian volunteers for the Festival. At that time the name of the organization was changed to the Kiwanis Music Festival. Later the Festival was expanded to include Dance competitions as well as Music. The name of the organization was then changed to its current title. With the incorporation of Dance, the Festival has grown in size from about sixth place in the Province to second place. The Festival has maintained a steady growth in number of entries ever since. 1998 will be the fourth year for Speech Arts. To meet these aims the RMC(Regina Multicultural Council) organizes and participates in a number of activities, of which the best known is Mosaic. Now using the theme “A festival of cultures, ” Mosaic has been held annually since 1974, when it began as a one-day festival. Since 1978, it has grown into a three-day event held in early June at pavilions located throughout Regina. Canadian Improv Games(CIG) is an education based format of Improvisational theatre for Canadian high schools. Schools form teams of up to 8 players, these teams compete in provincial tournaments, and the winning team from each province goes to the National Festival and Tournament held in Ottawa. The National Arts Centre is a major sponsor of the Games, and this is where the National Festival and Ottawa Tournament are held. The weather this year is completely confused ... Saturday, just as the afternoon began to get busy, a front came through, quick and wild, with thunderstorms, heavy gusts, and rain drenching and thick. In front of the storm was a strange sky. I’ve never seen one like it before. There were fat smears of green, dark and dirty but clearly and dramatically green, mixed into the clouds, among long braids of grey and black.
