OPG [Ontario Power Generation] indicated that changes in ground stress, induced by surface glacial loads through the earliest two glacial ice ages during the initial 150, 000 year period following decommissioning, would not affect pillar stability. Beyond 300, 000 years after decommissioning, OPG expected that the effects of several ice ages would cause significant rock failure and roof collapse within repository rooms.

The PWN-12A is another sounding rocket using... a dart with a ROBIN(Rocket Balloon Instrument) Inflatable Falling Sphere payload. At an apogee of about 115 km(70 miles), the dart releases a... metalized mylar balloon... While it is slowly descending back to earth, the balloon is tracked by a high-precision radar... on the ground. Minimum tracking altitude is about 30 km(18 miles), where the ambient pressure will cause the balloon to collapse. Using the balloon's known mass and volume, the radar track can be used to calculate atmospheric data like wind speed/direction and air density.

The other type of meteorological payload that can be used on a meteorological rocket consists of a falling ROBIN sphere that is used when probing the atmosphere to over 100 km altitude. These altitudes are above the normal operating levels for the thermistors aboard the rocketsonde. ... This ROBIN sphere is a spherical shaped balloon constructed of a thin (0.0001 mm thick) radar-reflective mylar material that is inflated with a small charge of inert gas to a known mass and volume. The dart containing the sphere typically reaches an altitude of 115 km where the sphere is deployed and inflated. When the sphere is inflated to super-pressure of approximately 10-12 mb, the sphere will reach a 1 meter (3.3. ft) diameter. When the balloon descends to an altitude of approximately 30 km, the air pressure outside the sphere will become greater than that inside, causing the sphere to collapse.

Patterned Ground Landforms.... Thermokarst is a general term that refers to the many landforms that develop in response to the melting of ground ice... Thawing permafrost creates uneven surfaces that primarily consist of subsidence features that collect water such as collapse scar bogs and small thermokarst lakes... Two cases are presented to demonstrate the development of thermokarst features.

Thermokarst features are produced by thawing of ground ice when the climate improves or by fires, disturbance of vegetation, erection of heated buildings, etc. in present-day permafrost areas. Localised collapse produces irregular hollows often with small thaw lakes, which progressively increase in size and coalesce to form large lakes(alases). Enlargment of thaw lakes occurs by thermo-erosion of the permafrost on the shores; this leads to slumping and the sediment released is often spread across the lake floor. The thaw-induced slope failures(ground-ice slumps) cause lake marginal cliffs to retreat at rates of 10 m/year or more. Small thaw lakes often form at the intersection of ice wedge polygons, and when these are joined by water in the marginal furrows of the polygons they form "beaded drainage". Thermokarst features cause many engineering(ground stability) problems encountered in permafrost regions.
