The goal of antimicrobial susceptibility testing is to predict the in vivo success or failure of antibiotic therapy. Tests are performed in vitro, and measure the growth response of an isolated organism to a particular drug or drugs. The tests are performed under standardized conditions so that the results are reproducible. The test results should be used to guide antibiotic choice. The results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing should be combined with clinical information and experience when selecting the most appropriate antibiotic for your patient.

The emergence and dissemination of resistance has made it imperative for laboratories to use in vitro tests that can detect resistance. The concept of antimicrobial resistance testing (ART) should replace antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). ART requires flexibility in testing systems and current AST methods are often handicapped. This is due to an over emphasis on standardization, not accounting for the diversity and complexity of resistance mechanisms.

Doppler weather radar. For many years radar has been used to provide information about the intensity and extent of rain and other forms of precipitation.... A major improvement in the capability of weather radar came about when engineers developed new radars that could measure the Doppler frequency shift in addition to the magnitude of the echo signal reflected from precipitation. The Doppler frequency shift is important because it is related to the radial velocity of the precipitation blown by wind(the component of the wind moving either toward or away from the radar installation). Since tornadoes, mesocyclones(which spawn tornadoes), hurricanes, and other hazardous weather phenomena tend to rotate, measurement of the radial wind speed as a function of viewing angle will identify rotating weather patterns.

In an interferogram, coherence is a measure of correlation. It can serve as a measure of the quality. [It gives information] as to the surface type(vegetated vs. rock) or [to an] otherwise invisible change that has occurred in the image [visible only in the phase image of an interferogram].

Such a measure of correlation ranges from 0. 0(where there is no useful information in the interferogram), to 1. 0(where there is no noise in the interferogram). Both extremes are rarely seen, most images lie somewhere in between. Coherence is affected by low slope, surface properties, time lag between passes, baseline and other technical details of the interferogram.

An electric motor rotates the two halves in the electric field to be measured so that they become alternately exposed to both the positive and negative direction of the field. The device normally used to measure atmospheric electric fields is a type of sensor called an electric field mill. It can be used on the ground to gain information about the field aloft, or it can be flown on an airplane or balloon. Instrumentation flown on Seasat included a radar altimeter, a microwave scatterometer for measuring surface wind speed and direction, a scanning multichannel microwave radiometer for sea surface temperature, a visible and infrared radiometer, and the first spaceborne synthetic aperture radar.

Microwave scatterometer... measures the microwave scattering or reflective properties of surfaces. It is also non-imaging, and is specifically designed to measure backscattering. This requires that it detect more detailed spectral information than imaging radar but has reduced spatial resolution and aerial coverage. The surface is scanned in two or more directions, usually by multiple sensors. The primary application of microwave scatterometers is to measure wind vectors(that is, speed and direction) over the ocean surface. This is based on the principle of ocean ’roughness’ being caused by wind and resulting in a characteristic surface pattern which may be identified by its scattering properties.
