Since the low cost sensor technologies available present several limitations to their inclusion in this system, it was developed and implemented a low cost sensor, as described by Valente et al.(1997), based on the heat-pulse and capacitance methods. In the first method the maximum temperature rise measured at some distance from a line heat source can be used to determine the volumetric heat capacity and hence the water content of a porous media, such as soil. The second method relates the volumetric water content with the capacitance change of a probe, inserted in the soil, according to its dielectric properties. The thermopile heat of combustion detector is at the heart of each heating value transmitter. Air is used as a heat transfer media and flows around the combustion chamber. Any increase in the heat produced by the combustion of a controlled sample of process gas is immediately sensed and reported to the microprocessor. Air enters the combustion chamber on the outside cold junctions where its heat is measured, then flows down the outside of the thermopile towards the viewer to turn through 180° past the end of the thermopile assembly and then flows up through the heat exchanger... to mix with the heated flue gases from the burner.  3, fiche 5, Anglais, - combustion%20detector
