Under contract from the Canadian Space Agency(CSA), the Canadian company, Kinetic Sciences Inc.(KSI), developed a proximity sensor that can provide both image features and range data very near to the surface of the sensor. Because the sensor works without using conventional lenses, it reduces the potential for distorting the image... An important need in many robotics systems is to obtain proximity measurements-which establish how close one object is to another-of the features of an object as it is approached at a close range by the finger tips or robot rippers’. In this situation normal visual sensing tends to be obscured, and can prevent the robot from properly grasping objects or completing tasks. What was required and developed by KSI was a ear-touch proximity sensor that could provide detailed information on the distance and orientation of one object with respect to another for objects between 1 centimetre and 1 millimetre away from the finger tip of the robot.

Surface application is one of the approved methods for application of liquid fumigants. Surface application is effective for treating top infestations such as grain moths or secondary beetles in flat storages. Flat storages and annexes can be treated only by surface applications, applying the liquid fumigants under pressure. A power sprayer with a 12 ro 25 millimetre diameter hose and a fine spray nozzle is used to control surface infestations of moths.

Even distribution of a fumigant is important, requiring that grain in flat storages be levelled prior to application. This does not apply in the case of moth infestation, since levelling will mix the moths with other uncontaminated grain.

Varian has just released a new extended interaction amplifier(EIA)-the VKB-2400T-that delivers a 1KW minimum peak power output(with a 30 dB minimum gain) at 95 CHz, well into the millimetre waveband. Small and light, the new amplifier provides excellent phase stability, and has already demonstrated up to 2. 3 KW of peak power at 95 CHz. Operating life of the EIA is expected to exceed 5000 hours and it is warranted for 1000 hours of operation.
