MOLDING POWDER [10 fiches]

Fiche 1 2015-04-09

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Plastics Manufacturing
DEF

A pressureless moulding process in which dry, fusible powders are caused to fuse into a uniform layer against a mould wall.

CONT

Powder molding.... The metal part is usually coated in a two component tank in which the powdered resin held in place by a porous plate is mixed with a highly-compressed gas which is forced through the porous metal plate. The gas-powder mixture, which resembles a fluid, adheres to any metal part, which, after being preheated above the melting point of the resin, is placed in the fluidized bed atmosphere.... The final fusing of the polymer takes place in an oven or in a bath of molten salt.

OBS

powder moulding: term and definition standardized by ISO.

CONT

What makes automatic molding automatic is the mold. There are a number of requirements for automatic molding. The machine must be capable of consistent, repetitive action. The mold must clear itself automatically. This means that all the parts have to be ejected using a runnerless mold, or that the runner and the parts have to be ejected in a conventional mold. There may be some method for assisting in the removal of the pieces, usually in the form of a wiper mechanism, air blast, or robot. All machines used automatically must have a low-pressure closing system to prevent the machine from closing under full pressure if there is any obstruction between the dies. The machine shuts itself off and/or an alarm is sounded. Automatic molding does not necessarily eliminate the operator. Many times, an operator is present to pack the parts and perform secondary operations. Automatic molding gives a better quality piece and more rapid cycle. In automatic molding an experienced person usually attends several machines. Unless the powder feed and part removal are automated, this person takes care of those operations.

OBS

automatic mold: A mold for injection, compression, or transfer molding that repeatedly goes through the entire molding cycle, including ejection, without human assistance.

Subject field(s)
  • Plastic Materials
CONT

Polyaryl sulfone offers the unique combination of thermoplasticity and retention of structurally useful properties at 500°. This material is supplied in both pellet and powder form. Its thermoplastic nature allows it to be fabricated by injection molding or extrusion techniques on standard commercially available equipment. Polyaryl sulfone consists mainly of phenyl and biphenyl groups linked by thermally stable ether and sulfone groups. It is distinguished from polysulfone polymers by the absence of aliphatic groups, which are liable to oxidative attack. This aromatic structure gives it excellent resistance to oxidative degradation and accounts for its retention of mechanical properties at high temperatures.

CONT

Polyaryl sulfone. A strong, hard, stiff plastic which can be used from -400 to +500°F, this polymer is used mostly in aerospace applications. ... This plastic is often used to upgrade other plastic applications with respect to temperature and to replace metals and ceramics in valve bodies, hydraulic seals, and bearings.

CONT

Poly(aryl sulfone) was introduced in 1983 and is available from Amoco Performance Products under the trade names Radel A-100, A-200, and A-300. It is suitable for high technology applications, including such electrical/electronic parts as printed-circuit boards, snap-fit connectors, and lamp housings.

OBS

Rotational molding : a process for producing large, hollow articles from thermoplastics. Powdered plastic is put in a heated mold, which is rotated about two mutually perpendicular axes to distribute the powder uniformly. The powder fuses on the mold surfaces. The mold is cooled by a water spray, opened, and the part removed.

Nylon made by condensation of hexamethylene diamine with adipic acid.

CONT

Polyamide is the technical name given to :... Nylon 6, 6; poly(hexamethyleneadipamide) ;-NH(CH2) 6NHCO(CH2) 8CO-.... Nylon 6, 6. In 1928, W. H. Carothers at Du Pont began systematic studies on condensation polymers, including nylon-type polyamides. In 1935, he first made nylon 6, 6 by polycondensation of hexamethylene diamine with adipic acid.... Nylon 6, 6, the first polyamide to appear on the market... The first product sold was a brush bristle. Ladies’ stockings followed one year later. Nylon 6, 6 molding powder was first offered for sale in the United States in 1941. Early applications were textile machinery gears and electrical coil forms.

CONT

Nylon 66 is a condensation product of adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine developed by Carothers in 1935. Adipic acid is obtained by catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane.

OBS

The term "nylon", though a trademark, is currently used as a common noun. It is a generic name for a family of polyamide polymers.
