Chaque année, avant la fermeture de la frontière, le Québec importait des milliers de paquets d'abeilles du sud des États-Unis. Depuis, un nombre beaucoup plus restreint nous provient exclusivement de l'Australie et de la Nouvelle-Zélande. Ces paquets servent à partir de nouvelles colonies, on les commande alors avec une reine. On les utilise parfois pour renforcer des colonies faibles, ils arrivent alors sans reine. The new unit of thickness is the millimetre and the corresponding area designation for pricing and weight or area calculations is the SITA(System International Tin Plate Area) which equals 100 square metres or 4. 9426 base boxes.... The use of symbols to designate gage was displaced by the use of base weights(or basis weights) expressed in pounds per base box that also indicated the approximate thickness of the tin-mill product... With the recent introduction of the metric system(SI) in production, gage is the basic unit for specification and area becomes only a derived value for commercial usage.

Tinplate sheets used to manufacture cans and boxes were originally packed into wooden boxes in order to protect the polished tin surface. Sheets cut to 35 cm X 50 cm (14 X 20 in) and of 0.3 mm thickness weighed approx. 454 g (1 lb) and 112 were packed into a box, known as the "basis box". Variation in thickness of sheet cut to the same size would vary the weight, and larger sizes were made, although these were then called "tinned sheets". A saltbox is a building with a long, pitched roof that slopes down to the back, generally a wooden frame house. A saltbox has just one story in the back and two stories in the front. The flat front and central chimney are recognizable features, but the asymmetry of the unequal sides and the long, low rear roof line are the most distinctive features of a saltbox, which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept.

More a building shape than a building style, the saltbox takes its name from a sloping gable roof that gives the house the shape of a wooden box used to store salt in Colonial times, like the reproduction of a 1770s saltbox by Replitiques. The saltbox house is formed by a one-story addition across the rear of a 1-1/2 or 2-story building. Initially an easy method of enlarging a house, it eventually became an accepted building form, particularly in New England after 1680. The style was common in New England before 1830, and it remained popular in other parts of the country until the late 1800s. A variation of early Colonial or Cape Cod style houses, the practical and simple saltbox was often a single room deep. Given that often a dozen or more people crowded into these early homes, colonists soon began looking for practical ways to expand living space.

Autoturn Engineering in the U. K. has developed a new form of barrier against vehicles known as Catsclaw. It consists of a series of rubber humps with retractable steel blades that can be raised or lowered electrically. Police can plug sections together across the roadway in less than two minutes. A motor box is added on one side. Inside each section are knife blades that normally lie fully retracted inside the humps. In an emergency, the battery-powered motor box raises the blades.
