Contrairement à d’autres méthodes spectroscopiques, la RMN [résonance magnétique nucléaire] possède la particularité de sonder l’environnement local d’un noyau choisi à travers la caractérisation des interactions influençant la relaxation. [...] La RMN des solides n’en est pas encore à ce niveau de haute résolution, sauf en technique HRMAS [expériences haute résolution à l'angle magique] pour les échantillons dits «mous» comme les résines gels, plantes […] En effet la rigidité du réseau cristallin accentue fortement l’influence sur la relaxation d’interactions d’origines diverses. De plus les études se font principalement sur des échantillons de poudre puisqu’il est difficile d’obtenir des monocristaux de taille suffisante (>1 mm³). Ainsi le caractère anisotrope des interactions et la présence de cristalittes aux orientations multiples génèrent des élargissements de raies de résonance.
