Fast reactors can be operated in a "burner" mode... Such reactors can "store" temporarily large quantities of plutonium as fuel in their cores, and, in the event that nuclear fission has to be replaced one day by better sources of concentrated energy, they can dispose of, or "burn, "inventories of plutonium and actinides. Dans Phénix et Superphénix, la matière fissile est du plutonium associé à de l'uranium appauvri (ce dernier provenant des usines d'enrichissement). Une très large proportion des neutrons non utilisés pour entretenir la réaction en chaîne est absorbée dans 238U, en donnant du plutonium.
