Il peut en effet arriver qu'un algorithme soit très rapidement convergent, mais que chaque pas nécessite des calculs fort longs.

With pertinent trees planting, several improvements are expectable for aesthetic, visual, historical or symbolic purpose, for runoff, noise and pollutant control and from a microclimatic point of view. Some of these actions seem be obvious but it should be noticed that few information are available from literature for precise quantitative results. Most of existing results are based on measurements and can be considered only as specific data in a certain context. What happens if vegetation is introduced in a mineral space or if a building is constructed instead of a park? Extrapolations of measurements are often not possible, so only numerical simulations can afford advice to urban planners on the way they may improve urban environment.

Prenons l'exemple d'une zone périurbaine où se côtoient des espaces bâtis, des champs labourés, des espaces à dominante végétale. Un champs labouré (minéral), une forêt (végétal), auront une texture relativement homogène, c'est-à-dire des valeurs de réponses de pixels proches. Un espace pavillonnaire quant à lui, sera constitué par une combinaison de valeurs de pixels distinctes les unes des autres.

Filtering is an operation designed to improve image readability and/or to extract certain information from them. The principle of the various filters is to modify the numerical value of each pixel as a function of the neighbouring pixel values. For example, if the value of each pixel is replaced by the average of its value and those of its eight neighbours the image is smoothed, that is to say, the finer details disappear and the image appears fuzzier. In "mobile window filtering" the programme computes for a given pixel the sum of the products of the neighbouring pixel values multiplied by coefficients given in a table of coefficients, then repeats the operation for the next pixel and so on.

A vast amount of sea ice information is today available at the various ice services in the world. Almost all of this information is stored in the form of ice charts for operational purposes. For statistical or climatological use the chart format is however not convenient and the information needs to be digitized. This is done by assigning numerical values to the ice parameters and to read these values at given grid points on the chart. The charts prepared by the various ice services do not all contain the same number of parameters. The resolution and accuracy also vary according to the use for which the charts are intended. A large degree of flexibility has therefore to be built into the design of both code, format and grid. It should allow digitization of historical ice charts as well as current ones in order to obtain a comprehensive computer-compatible sea ice data bank which is currently updated. The SIGRID format is mainly designed to meet larger scale climate requirements but it may also be used by national services for other purposes.

The third and last phase of epistemic diagnosis where the updating of the knowledge state takes place as a continuous series of observations from which new diagnostic information is integrated into the existing student model. This includes the recognition of patterns that manifest themselves over time. The updating methods use scalar attributes, such as numerical weights, associated with individual elements of the knowledge state. These weights are updated by some statistical or pseudostatistical computations as knowledge manifests itself in behavior. Some diagnostic updating methods are very similar to what is called in AI "truth maintenance" or "belief revision"(Doyle 1979, de Kecer 1986).

Diagnostic updating methods which combine theories of learning and belief revision in a form of "reasoning about learning" still belong to the future (Halpern 1986).
