As one of eleven large-scale working model forests, representing the five major forest ecoregions of Canada, the EOMF works with government, landowners, industry. First Nations and other stakeholders to develop new ways to sustain and manage our forest resources. The EOMF covers 1. 5 million hectares, from the Counties of Leeds and Lanark, to the Quebec border and St. Lawrence River. Responsibility for forestry on federal lands is divided amongst various departments. The CFS does not have a mandate to oversee forestry operations on federal lands. A large chunk of the forest on federal lands is in the Northwest Territories and Yukon, which is managed by local authorities. The Department of National Defence and other departments have responsibility for some federal forest land.
