The Utopia Pavilion was one of the most noticed of the five theme pavilions at Portugal' s World Exhibition in Lisbon. For the first time at a World or Universal Exhibition, a show was staged for over 3 million spectators. It took co-author and artistic director François Confino three years during which he worked with American, Canadian, French and Portuguese staff to see this incredible challenge through. Soaring effects and gigantic special effects were specially designed, and extremely complex mechanical systems bred movement into flexible materials and stage sets at an unusually large scale. Through close collaboration with Philippe Genty, the director, Oceans & Utopias enticed the audience on a fascinating journey through mythology, conquest and the anguish of those at sea known to everyone faced with the boundlessness of the ocean.

Pour la première fois dans le cadre d'une exposition mondiale ou universelle, un spectacle a été donné à voir à plus de 3 millions de personnes. Dans un stade couvert construit pour l'occasion, 6 500 spectateurs en moyenne ont assisté 4 fois par jour, pendant 130 jours d'affilée, aux 520 représentations du spectacle. Sous la direction artistique de François Confino et de Philippe Genty, trois ans de travail avec des équipes américaines, canadiennes, françaises et portugaises ont été nécessaires pour mener à bien ce défi. Des effets d'envols et des effets spéciaux de grande envergure ont été spécifiquement développés pour ce spectacle tandis que des systèmes mécaniques très élaborés ont permis de mettre en mouvement à une échelle inhabituelle des matériaux souples et des éléments de décors. «Océans et Utopies» a entraîné les spectateurs dans un fascinant parcours onirique à travers les mythologies, les conquêtes et les angoisses aquatiques de ceux qui se sont confrontés aux étendues océanes.

The theme, Transportation and Communication, celebrated the centenaires of the founding of Vancouver and the arrival on the Pacific coast of the first passenger train. Fifty-four governments and industries from six continents participated and there were over 22 million individual visits to the site. The commissioner general was Patrick Reid. Located along Vancouver's inner-city waterway, the 70 hectare site featured over 80 pavilions and many indoor and outdoor performance venues, including the Xerox International Theatre, a 1500-seat outdoor amphitheatre; The Big House, a 400-seat theatre of longhouse design; The Barn, a 300-seat proscenium theatre; and the Street of the Expo site on which a street festival took place throughout the exposition's run. The Canadian Pavilion, separate from the main site accessible to visitors by a four--minute ride on Vancouver's new Advanced Light Rapid Transit system, housed five performance spaces including a 500-seat outdoor amphitheatre, the 380-seat Amiga Studio(the exhibition's only enclosed theatre), and the 350-seat Inner Stage.
