Any equipment or cargo carried by a spacecraft or launch vehicle or mounted on an orbiting space platform or space station.

OBS

In terms of the mass budget, the term payload also includes the crew of a manned spacecraft. For unmanned spacecraft, the term is used to differentiate between equipment concerned directly with the spacecraft's application(the payload) and that which supports the operation of that payload(the subsystems contained within the service module).

La notion de charge utile varie selon les points de vue; ainsi ce terme peut s'appliquer à un satellite par rapport au lanceur qui le porte, ou bien au bloc expérimental embarqué sur un satellite par rapport à ce satellite. Dans un engin spatial d'observation ou de sondage, la charge utile comporte généralement plusieurs instruments.

D'un point de vue budgétaire, la charge utile comprend l'équipage d'un véhicule spatial habité. Lorsqu'il s'agit d'un véhicule non habité, le terme désigne alors l'ensemble des équipements nécessaires au fonctionnement du véhicule et de la charge utile elle-même, c'est-à-dire les sous-systèmes du module de service.

The Spacehab's Logistics Double Module [LDM] is a 20-foot long, 14-foot wide, 11. 2-foot high pressurized aluminum module carried in Atlantis’ payload bay and connected to the middeck area of the orbiter by an access tunnel. For STS-106, the LDM will carry approximately 8, 100 pounds of hardware, equipment and logistical supplies to outfit the International Space Station. Designed to augment the Shuttle's middeck, the double module has a total cargo capacity of up to 10, 000 pounds and contains the systems necessary to support the crewmembers, such as ventilation, lighting and limited power.

Each NASA ISPR provides 1. 6 m³(55. 5ft³) of internal volume. The rack weighs 104 kg(230 lbm) and can accommodate an additional 700 kg(1543 lbm) of payload equipment. The rack has internal mounting provisions to allow attachment of secondary structure. The ISPRs will be outfitted with a thin center post to accommodate sub-rack-sized payloads, such as the 48. 3 cm(19 in) Spacelab Standard Interface Rack(SIR) Drawer or the Space Shuttle Middeck Locker. Utility pass-through ports are located on each side to allow cables to be run between racks. Module attachment points are provided at the top of the rack, and via pivot points at the bottom of the rack. The pivot points support installation and maintenance. Tracks on the exterior front posts allow mounting of payload equipment and laptop computers. Additional adapters on the ISPRs are provided for ground handling.

Du fait que les modules européen, américain et japonais utilisent le même concept d'ISPR, les bâtis sont interchangeables entre les laboratoires, à l'exception des laboratoires russes qui n'ont pas adopté ce standard. Le [Columbus Orbital Facility] COF peut recevoir simultanément dix bâtis ISPR de type scientifique comportant divers instruments et expériences ainsi que trois bâtis de stockage d'équipements. La capacité de chaque bâti est de 1,5m³ pour une charge maximale de 700 kg.
