There are two types of vacuum pumps commonly used in the tritium processing industry : the oil-filled vane pump and the dry scroll pump. The oil-filled vane pump has been in use in the vacuum industry for over a hundred years. It is reliable and easily maintained. However, the oil comes into contact with the tritium and becomes heavily contaminated. This poses a hazard during maintenance, and the disposal of contaminated oil is becoming more difficult. The dry scroll pump has a similar performance to the oil-filled pumps without the problem of contaminated oil handling and disposal.

In BIP-I, the student model is defined only in terms of the skills, though in general other levels could be used as well. Associated with each skill is a pair of numerical values. One value stands for the system's estimate of the student's mastery of the skill and is updated by very simple techniques according to his performance on each task. The other stands for the student's own estimate of his understanding and is updated in the course of a short interview following each exercise. Since problem selection takes both values into account, this is an interesting, albeit simple, combination of inferential and interactive diagnosis.

Applies to systems such as WUSOR, ACE, the LISP tutor and the MACSYMA ADVISOR that invite the student to participate explicitly in the diagnostic process by volunteering information, or engage in menu-driven dialogues with the student that provide information about the student’s goals. Even if the student is more involved in the formation of the student model, inferential diagnostic capabilities remain necessary.

MHO(Lesgold et al., 1987) is a system for learning principles of electricity that supports both free exploration and guided problem solving. Its tutoring component exploits the curriculum organization to implement the concept of steering testing. When it takes control of the interaction, MHO dynamically generates tasks-electrical circuits and questions about them-that have to fulfil two conditions. First, observing the student's performance on each task should maximize the information made available concerning possible changes in her knowledge state. Second, each task should concentrate on elements of the curriculum that are in the current focus so that diagnostic information can direct the course of instruction.
