There is an alternative between closed-and open-loop systems called standing column wells(SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger.... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe.... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. We present the modification of two ESA [European Space Agency] ground stations carried out in order to support the in-flight RF [Radio Frequency] validation of the Proximity Communication Equipment(PCE), part of the International Space Station(ISS). This subsystem plays a critical role during the docking of the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), and has to be tested prior to each ATV launch, to ensure that the RF performance is as expected. For the check-out, an unmodulated signal is transmitted by the PCE during an ISS pass, and received by the two ground stations. Based on the strength of the received signal, the radiation characteristic of the complete PCE can be assessed, and compared with the nominal performance. The measurement process requires calibrating the receiving subsystem, including antenna, front-end and back-end equipment. A part of the International Space Station that Japan is responsible for is an experiment module named "Kibo, "or "hope" in Japanese... Kibo will consist of a Pressurized Module, an Exposed Facility, an Experiment Logistics Module-Pressurized Section, an Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section, and a Remote Manipulator System.... The Exposed Facility is an experimental platform aimed for various tests with the instruments directly exposed to outer space. Being the Space Station's only laboratory in such an environment exposed to space, Japan's Kibo has already received high expectations for its performance. The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. Cost-effective open-plan environments(COPE)-a new research initiative. Many organizations believe that reducing office space is a great way to save money. But putting more people in the same area can lead to poorer indoor air quality, lower lighting levels, higher noise levels and increased fire hazards. These negative impacts can result in lower levels of employee satisfaction, more absenteeism, decreased productivity, and higher costs. The multidisciplinary COPE team will conduct innovative research using sophisticated computer models, laboratory facilities and field studies. L'IRC (Institut de recherche en construction) vient de lancer une nouvelle initiative qui pourrait bien permettre de le trouver, ce moyen. Le projet AOR regroupe une équipe multidisciplinaire qui effectuera de la recherche innovatrice en recourant à des modèles informatiques sophistiqués, à des installations de laboratoire de pointe et à des études sur le terrain.
