L'horizon artificiel et le conservateur de cap sont basés sur l'immobilité dans l'espace d'un gyroscope. Du fait qu'un gyroscope résiste au renversement, il fait office de référence stable par rapport à l'horizon réel ou à une direction spécifique.

Le gyroscope de l'horizon artificiel de la plupart des petits appareils se renverse si le tangage dépasse +/-70 degrés ou si l'angle d'inclinaison latérale dépasse 100 degrés. Si le gyroscope se renverse, les indications qu'il délivre ne sont pas fiables tant qu'il ne s'est pas réaligné, ce qui peut nécessiter plusieurs minutes de vol rectiligne à l'horizontale. Les avions de voltige ou les appareils plus importants sont souvent équipés de gyroscopes fiables jusqu'à 360 degrés de tangage et d'inclinaison latérale.

Basic system operation and performance allow for the processing of contaminated JP-5 fuel that consists of any combination of particulates, water, and aviation fuel. Contaminated fuel is loaded into the process tank via a defueler truck used to collect the segregated JP-5 from squadron hazardous waste storage sites. The fuel is circulated at 15 gpm through the system until it is determined to be visually clean via a sampling port. A gravity drain valve allows for the discharge of wastewater stripped from the fuel during circulation. Depending on the level of particulate contamination, the fuel may be considered clean(less than 2mg/1 particulates, less than 5ppm free water) after one pass through the system or several. A sample of the fuel is then sent to the laboratory for further testing, especially with respect to the flash point. The system can only remove water and particulates.

Its tutoring component exploits the curriculum organization to implement the concept of steering testing. When it takes control of the interaction, MHO dynamically generates tasks-electrical circuits and questions about them-that have to fulfil two conditions. First, observing the student's performance on each task should maximize the information made available concerning possible changes in her knowledge state. Second, each task should concentrate on elements of the curriculum that are in the current focus so that diagnostic information can direct the course of instruction.
