Contact Period in the Champlain Valley(1609-1664 AD)... 1609 the Mahican living in the Hudson Valley came in contact with Dutch explorer Henry Hudson. Shortly thereafter, the Dutch began to trade metal tools to the Mahican in exchange for furs. The Mahican also developed alliances with the French. When the English captured New Amsterdam in 1664, a region which included much of the Mahican's traditional territory, the Mahican were forced to develop alliances with the British. By 1700 the Mahican population had been decreased from an estimated 4, 000 to about 500 through European diseases, famine, wars, and political pressures. Many of the Mahican merged with other groups, including the Dutch, the Western Abenaki, the French, and the Mohawk Iroquois. By 1720 the Mahican no longer existed as an organized native tribe in the Champlain and Hudson Valleys. The influx of Europeans to the Northeast caused great upheaval among the region's Native American populations. Disease, confusing political and economic relations, and continuous warfare split native communities apart and forced them to join outlying groups....

Le mot Lumières définit métaphoriquement le mouvement intellectuel, culturel et philosophique qui a dominé, en Europe et particulièrement en France, le XVIIIe siècle auquel il a donné, par extension, son nom de siècle des Lumières. Les Lumières ont marqué le domaine des idées et de la littérature par leurs remises en question fondées sur la «raison éclairée» de l'être humain et sur l'idée de liberté. Par leurs engagements contre les oppressions religieuses, morales et politiques, les membres de ce mouvement, qui se voyaient comme une élite avancée ouvrant pour un progrès du monde, combattant l'irrationalité, la superstition et la tyrannie des siècles passés, ont procédé au renouvellement du savoir, de l'éthique et de l'esthétique de leur temps. In 1907, J. von Braun at Göttingen University in Germany discovered that the self-condensation of e-aminocaproic ["e", Greek letter for "epsilon"] acid led to a caprolactam polymer, probably of low molecular weight, as it appears today. In 1938, P. Schlack at I. G. Farbenindustrie in Berlin polymerized caprolactam to high-molecular-weight nylon 6.... Nylon 6 was commercialized in the period 1929-1940 by I. G. Farben. The first applications included melt-spun bristles and textile filaments; melt-cast tapes used as transmission belts; and injection-molded bushings, bearings, and gears. In the United States production of nylon 6 was taken up in 1955 by Allied Chemical.

The term "nylon", though a trademark, is currently used as a common noun. It is a generic name for a family of polyamide polymers.

British planning for the postwar period included a para-military force to police the conquered Boer republics. This resulted in the creation of the South African Constabulary(SAC). In August 1900, two months after the fall of Pretoria, Major-General Robert Baden-Powell, famous as the leader of the besieged garrison of Mafeking, was appointed to raise and command the new force. In retrospect, British hopes that the 8, 500-strong constabulary could assume responsibility for pacifying the countryside were hopelessly optimistic. The Boers continued to fight on following the capture of their capitals, contrary to the expectations of the British high command.

An index used to gage the severity of drought conditions by using a water balance equation to track water supply and demand.

The Palmer Index was developed by Wayne Palmer in the 1960s and uses temperature and rainfall information in a formula to determine dryness. It has become the semi-official drought index. The Palmer Index is most effective in determining long term drought-a matter of several months-and is not as good with short-term forecasts (a matter of weeks). The Palmer Index can also reflect excess rain using a corresponding level reflected by plus figures; i.e., 0 is normal, plus 2 is moderate rainfall, etc.
