A reactive lesion occurring in soft tissues, at times near bone and periosteum, most often after trauma. The lesion is characterized by fibrous, osseous, and cartilaginous proliferation and metaplasia.

OBS

The term is a misnomer because often skeletal muscle is not involved and when involved it does not necessarily show inflammatory changes. In its early evolution, bone may not be identifiable on conventional radiography, but computed tomography and ultrasonography may show early signs of calcification in soft tissues.

Remaniement du tissu musculaire strié ou de tout autre tissu conjonctif associant une prolifération fibroblastique et des métaplasies cartilagineuses ou osseuses. D'origine le plus souvent post-traumatique, cette affection peut atteindre la surface externe d'un os ou les tissus mous, à distance de la surface périostée. Elle peut simuler un processus néoplasique. À la période d'état, l'aspect diagnostic est celui d'une formation osseuse comprenant une corticale et des travées osseuses. À un stade plus précoce, la radiographie ne montre pas les éléments calcifiés : il convient alors de recourir à la tomodensitométrie ou à l'échographie pour faire le diagnostic.

OBS

Le terme myosite ossifiante, quoique très largement adopté, est mauvais. Le tissu musculaire n'est pas nécessairement atteint dans cette lésion qui n'est pas inflammatoire. La lésion, apparaissant dans les tissus mous, est quelquefois dénommée tumeur osseuse pseudo-maligne des tissus mous. La myosite ossifiante est nettement distincte de l'affection rare et généralisée connue sous le nom de myosite ossifiante progressive.

Periosteal elevators [...] are used to strip portions of the membrane(periosteum) covering the exterior surface of a bone. Periosteal elevators are used for trauma, spinal and other bone and soft tissue procedures. They are well balanced equipment with enough hardness to maintain the sharp edges. In the oral surgery, they are used to separate the tooth or the bone from the fibrous surroundings. Periosteal elevator is also used to access the root and may also be used as a retractor.

Periosteal reaction refers to the deposition of new bone beneath the periosteum. Several types of reaction may be induced, each with a different dynamic and physiologic implication. The reactions may be unilaminar(single layer), multilaminar, cuffed(Codman's triangle), spiculated, or cloaked.

The term periostitis is often used loosely in describing non-inflammatory periosteal bone formation; the term periosteal reaction should be employed in such conditions.
