Although the macular dystrophy was initially termed "benign, "a follow-up examination of the original cases revealed evidence of progression of the condition. A progressive decrease in visual acuity, nyctalopia and dyschromatopsia were found in some of the original family members with the macular dystrophy 10 years after the original description of the condition. Pentosan polysulfate sodium maculopathy(PPSM)... is an acquired progressive retinal pigmentary disease associated with oral pentosan polysulfate sodium(PPS) use. Pentosan polysulfate sodium, approved... for treatment of interstitial cystitis, has been associated with a maculopathy at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium and retinal pigment epithelium photoreceptor interface and, at times, can extend to the peripheral retina.
