A liquid magnet.... The melt of an alloy(Co80-Pd20) which is ferromagnetic in the solid state at room temperature was undercooled below its melting point. The freely suspended droplet(diameter approx. 7 mm)-processed in the coil of an electromagnetic levitation facility-was attracted by a permanent magnet when the temperature approached the Curie temperature(lower picture). The attractive force depends on the temperature in a way characteristic for ferromagnetic materials. This appears to be the first demonstration for the possible existence of long-range magnetic order even in a liquid.

A line used to indicate the direction of a field, especially an electric or magnetic field, at various points in space. The tangent of a line of force at each point indicates the orientation of the field at that point. Arrows are usually used to indicate the direction of the force.

A field line is a locus that is defined by a vector field and a starting location within the field. A vector field defines a direction at all points in space; a field line may be constructed by tracing a path in the direction of the vector field. Field lines are useful for visualizing vector fields, which consist of a separate individual vector for every location in space. If the vector field describes a velocity field, then the field lines follow stream lines in the flow. A family of motors in which a permanent magnet replaces the stator winding.

In some small PM DC motors, the rotor is still fed by a conventional brush-and-commutator system. A more important type of PM motor has a stator with three windings producing a rotating field, as in induction and synchronous motors. The rotor consists of one or more permanent magnets that interact with the rotating field so as to align the poles in the rotor with the poles of the rotating field. The speed of the motor is the speed of the rotating field. Because there is no rotor current and the rotor magnetic field is constant, there are no losses in the rotor, helping to make PM motors more efficient... that induction motors.
