Since an elliptically polarized wave can be decomposed into an arbitrary set of mutually orthogonal component waves with their polarization planes perpendicular to each other and with a fixed phase difference, we expect to see a revival of an elliptical polarization trajectory by recomposing the THz electric field obtained at any set of two orthogonal directions.

Magneto-optics is the study of effects arising from the interaction of light with magnetized media. Initially linearly polarized light, after interaction with such materials, can exhibit both ellipticity and a rotation of the polarization state. These effects are generally categorized into two phenomena, the Faraday Effect which occurs when electro-magnetic radiation is transmitted through a magnetized media, and the Kerr Effect which deals with reflections from the magnetized media. The Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect(MOKE) is further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence... If the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect. As a matter of simplification, near normal incidence is usually employed when doing experiments in the polar geometry. In the longitudinal effect the magnetization vector is parallel to both the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization is perpendicular to the plane of incidence and parallel to the surface it is said to be in the transverse configuration.

polarization of a propagating wave is determined by the locus or path described by the electric field vector with respect to time

OBS

Polarization is a term that often arises in the literature and when considering radio frequency communication and RFID. If we ascribe an x, y, z co-ordinate system to a propagating wave as illustrated below, with the direction of propagation being in the z direction, the electric field vector E will be in the x, y plane. If E remains in the same orientation with respect to time, so that its locus describes a straight line, the wave is said to be linearly polarized. However, if the locus describes a circular motion with respect to time the wave is said to be circularly polarized. Where the locus describes an elliptical path, the wave is said to be elliptically polarized.

OBS

Circular polarization is often used in communication systems since the orientation of the transmitting and receiving antenna is less important than it is with linearly polarized waves. The magnetic vector, H, always remains perpendicular to the E vector. Using an IEEE convention, a clockwise circular rotating wavefront approaching a receiver is defined as being left-hand circular(LHC) polarized. The power in the wavefront is expressed in the form of the Poynting vector, P : P=(E x H)=E x H sin..., where... is the phase angle between E and H.

Magneto-optic Kerr effect(MOKE) is one of the magneto-optic effects. It describes changes of the reflections from the magnetized media. It is similar to the Faraday effect that describes the light passing through the media. The light that is reflected from a magnetized surface, changes in polarization. MOKE can be further categorized by the direction of the magnetization vector with respect to the reflection surface and the plane of incidence. When the magnetization vector is perpendicular to the reflection surface and parallel to the plane of incidence, the effect is called the polar Kerr effect.
