A large, flat, usually delta-shaped motorless aircraft with an attached harness or seat, designed to carry a person or two people through the air for a short while.

Hang gliders can be rigid or semi-rigid. Semi-rigid, which is the most common type, have aluminium spars and battens in their wings, but are covered in a tight sheath of Dacron cloth. [Avalanche Victim Search. ] The initial search involves a fast scan of the entire area where victims might be found(that is, from the last seen point, within the perimeters of the avalanche, and in the deposition areas). If a transceiver signal is found, carry out a transceiver search. If there is more than one person buried, the initial search continues to look for visual clues, etc.

Using an avalanche cord is the oldest form of equipment-mainly used before beacons became available. The principle is simple. An approximately 10-meter long red cord(similar to parachute cord) is attached to the person in question's belt. While skiing, snowboarding, or walking the cord is dragged along behind the person. If the person gets buried in an avalanche, the light cord stays on top of the snow. Due to the color the cord is easily visible for rescue personnel. Typically the cord has iron markings every one meter that indicate the direction and length to the victim.

Le principe qui a conduit à la cordelette d'avalanche est simple. Lorsqu'un skieur est emporté par une avalanche, la probabilité qu'il soit repéré augmente s'il traîne derrière lui une cordelette de couleur vive, dont il est probable qu'une partie reste visible en surface de l'avalanche. En «remontant» la cordelette, on atteint la victime à laquelle elle est attachée. Elle était donc directement destinée au pratiquant lui-même, qu'il soit professionnel ou non. La cordelette d'avalanche, en nylon ou perlon, mesurait 16 m de long, et avait un diamètre de 3 mm. Elle possédait tous les deux ou trois mètres une bague en laiton sur laquelle était inscrite une flèche indiquant la direction de la victime et la distance l'en séparant.

Control-line model airplanes are flown in a circle, attached to a handle by a set of lines. The pilot can control the flight of the model by manipulating the handle. Flying model airplanes on lines has a long and illustrious history. The earliest attempts at "control-line" used one line attached to a long pole. The pilot would cause the airplane to climb or dive by "leading" it with the pole. The person usually credited with inventing the now widely used two line system is Jim Walker, who came up with the idea sometime in the 30s or 40s. The two line system(often referred to a "U-Control", and used on perhaps 99% of control line models) uses a triangular bellcrank to transfer the movement of the wires to the pushrod, connected to the elevator and/or flap control horns. Some Speed flyers use "monoline", which is a system that utilizes line twisting for control.

Fulton Surface-To-Air Recovery System. The recovery kit is dropped to the person to be recovered who then puts on the overall-type harness and inflates the balloon which carries an attached lift line. An HC-130H engages the line with its V-shaped yoke and the individual is reeled on board. Red flags on the lift line guide the pilot during daylight recoveries; lights on the lift line are used for night recoveries. Recovery kits were designed for one and two-man recoveries, but eventually proved impractical for most rescue purposes. However, they are available for special operations.
