In August, 2007, the Settlement Workers in Schools(SWIS) program sponsored a pilot project to prepare newly arrived youth for entry to eight(8) high schools in Ontario. Called Newcomer Orientation Week or NOW, this intensive orientation initiative was piloted in six(6) high schools in Toronto, one(1) in Peel Region and one(1) in Hamilton. The NOW program was strategically positioned to occur just prior to the beginning of the school year. In NOW, former newcomer students are trained to lead the activities with the newly arrived students. The overall concept of NOW is that newcomer youth begin to feel more comfortable in the school setting and, if they run into difficulties, know how to get support-from PLs, teachers and/or SWIS workers. En 2007, le projet SONA a été mis à l’essai dans huit écoles secondaires de l’Ontario pour fournir une orientation aux élèves du secondaire nouvellement arrivés au Canada dès leur arrivée au pays. La Semaine d’orientation des nouveaux arrivants (SONA) permet de présenter l’école et la collectivité aux élèves qui sont des nouveaux arrivants pendant la dernière semaine d’août avant la rentrée des classes. Cette séance est présentée par des jeunes qui ont été des nouveaux arrivants (des « peer leaders ») et animée par les TEE (Travailleurs de l'établissement dans les écoles) et les enseignants. CPHI(Canadian Population Health Initiative) began as a pilot initiative in 1997, in response to a recommendation by the National Forum on Health. Further financial support of $19. 9 million dollars over four years was provided to CPHI in the 1999 federal budget through the Health Information Roadmap Initiative. CPHI funding($15 million) was renewed in the December 2001 federal budget, for an additional four years(2003 to 2007). CPHI's mission is to : foster a better understanding of factors that affect the health of individuals and communities, and; contribute to developing policies that reduce inequities and improve the health and well-being of Canadians. The National Population Health Institute was the former name in 1997. L'ISPC (Initiative sur la santé de la population canadienne) a initié, en 1997, un essai pilote à la suite d une recommandation du Forum national sur la santé. Le budget fédéral de 1999 a alloué, par le biais de l'Initiative du Carnet de route en matière d'information sur la santé, 19,9 millions de dollars additionnels à l'ISPC, répartis sur quatre ans. Dans le cadre du Carnet de route II, le budget fédéral a renouvelé, en décembre 2001, le financement de l'ISPC en lui octroyant 15 millions de dollars pour quatre autres années (2003 à 2007). La mission de l'ISPC consiste à : faire comprendre davantage les facteurs qui influent sur la santé des individus et des collectivités; contribuer à l'élaboration de politiques qui réduisent les inégalités et améliorent la santé et le bien-être des Canadiens. En 1997, l'ancien nom était : Institut national pour la santé de la population. En 1999, l'ISPC est devenue une partie intégrale de l'Institut canadien d'information sur la santé (ICIS). The National Technology Index(NTI) is a newly-approved pilot project of Strategis, Industry Canada's business information World Wide Web service, to assist provincial and federal laboratories, universities and centres of excellence to market their technology commercialization opportunities. It has been developed with the technical assistance of the Canadian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information(CISTI) and is a joint initiative between Industry Canada product line managers for the Canadian Technology Gateway, Trans-Forum, and dISTCovery, as well as the Waterloo Innovation Centre. The NTI has been designed to replace traditional high-maintenance databases with a powerful distributed search engine capable of scanning and retrieving technology opportunity documents located at sites across the World Wide Web.
