The fire protection system is separated into two categories : detection and extinguishing. Detection systems are installed in the engine; wheel well, APU [auxiliary power unit], and lavatory areas. Fire extinguishing capability is available for all engines, the APU, and the lavatories.... The fire shutoff handles are located in the pilot's overhead panel. Upon activation of an engine fire detection systems a red warning light in the fire shutoff handle comes on, a master FIRE WARN light on the glareshield in front of each pilot comes on. and a bell sounds in the cockpit. Pressing the bell cutout button near the fire shutoff handles can silence the bell. On some aircraft also by pressing either FIRE WARN cap on the glareshield, or using the RESET switch on the FE's auxiliary panel. The lights in the fire shutoff handles remain illuminated until the high temperature condition no longer exists or the fire detection system is destroyed.

Some aircraft manufacturers provide reference points which the pilot uses while making the seat adjustments.... The intent, of course, is to have the pilot adjust the seat in order for the eyes of the pilot to be at the optimum location for visibility, inside and outside the cockpit, as well as the correct position for access to the cockpit switches and knobs... This optimum position for the pilot's eyes is referred to as the design eye reference point.

The overhead panel is the nerve center of the aircraft systems and replaces many of the controls previously located on the flight engineers panel.

OBS

With a few exceptions, instruments are mounted on a panel in the cockpit so that the dials are plainly visible to the pilot or copilot. Instrument panels are usually made of sheet aluminum alloy strong enough to resist flexing. The panels are non-magnetic and are painted with a nonglare paint to eliminate glare or reflection. In aircraft equipped with only a few instruments, only one panel is necessary; in some aircraft, additional panels are required. In such cases the forward instrument panel is usually referred to as the "main" instrument panel to distinguish it from additional panels on the cockpit overhead or along the side of the flight compartment. On some aircraft the main instrument panel is also referred to as the pilot's or copilot's panel, since many of the pilot's instruments on the left side of the panel are duplicated on the right side.

A full-up simulator recreates sounds, motion, visual scenes, instrument presentations and all other systems in order to create a realistic flight training environment. The handling characteristics of the simulator represent actual aircraft characteristics based on available flight data and input from experienced pilots.

This information could easily be stored on a CD ROM along with approach and en-route navigation charts to produce a so-called "paperless cockpit". While the lower inside quadrant of the lens is clear, the remaining 80% is obscured in fog-like appearance. If the pilot looks outside the cockpit, the lower quadrant will fog instantly but will clear once he returns to the instruments.

Even when the designer has settled the size and angle of the tail plane, the force which it will experience will be outside the control of the pilot, and although they may automatically compensate for such things as changes in pitching moment on the main planes, they cannot possibly deal with changes of weight such as are caused by the dropping of bombs, consumption of fuel, and changes in the disposition of passengers and cargo. For this reason the adjustable tail plane was introduced, this being operated by an actuating gear and controlled by a wheel or lever in the pilot's cockpit. This enabled the pilot to alter the angle of setting of the tail plane during flight and so cause downward or upward forces upon it at will, thus balancing the aeroplane under all conditions.
