Winch. A mechanism arranged to hoist by manual or mechanical power through the medium of a rope, cable, etc., winding on a drum is a winch... The hand power is applied at a crank or cranks, which are attached to a shaft bearing a pinion gear. This pinion engages with a large gear attached to the winding drum... A high-capacity winch may have a double reduction gear, instead of the single gear illustrated.

The differential pinion gears transfer torque to the side gears to turn the driving axle shafts. The differential pinion gears determine how much torque goes to each driving axle, depending on the resistance an axle shaft or wheel has while turning. The pinion gears can move with the differential housing or case, and they can rotate on the pinion shaft.

Rack and pinion is the simplest form of steering. The small pinion gear on the end of the steering shaft(the driving gear) meshes with the rack(the driven gear), a long bar with teeth cut into one side. The rack runs across the car, and its ends are connected to the tie rods.
