QUICK SHOT [6 fiches]

Fiche 1 2012-01-13

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

DEF

CONT

CONT

CONT

CONT

Compact backswings and short, smooth strokes are best [if you want to use the new Dunlop Max Enforcer tennis racquet].

CONT

OBS

Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. One speaks of "classical strokes" rather than "classical shot". A "blow" on the other hand is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

An offensive groundstroke where the tennis ball is propelled forcefully with either top spin or with a flat-faced racquet deep into an opponent's court. Such a quick shot would barely clear the net.

OBS

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion: In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task. (The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever) However in both French and Spanish, "drive" is often used as a synonym for "forehand" (shot/stroke), or like English it can refer to any hard shot, whether on the backhand or forehand side.

CONT

... driven shots down the line can travel above head height at the net and still drop inside the base-line.

PHR

Angled, backhand, cross-court, deep, flat, forehand, hard, penetrating drive.

PHR

A drive leaves the racket.

PHR

To hit, return, rip, smack, wallop a drive. To thread the needle with a drive.

Domaine(s)

DEF

PHR

Golpe de ataque angulado.

DEF

Technique in the last part of the follow-through in shot put, hammer and discus throws, used to gain body balance and to avoid fouling by stepping on or outside the circle (i.e. a recovery mechanism following the release of the implement).

CONT

After the shot has left the hand, a quick movement reversing the position of the feet transfers the body weight on to the right foot. An extension of this foot tends to stop the forward motion of the body, and in turn prevents a foul.

OBS

The term "reverse" is most commonly used.

CONT

DEF

A short pass made with a quick snap of the wrist which raises the puck off the ice just enough to get over an opponent’s stick or skate.

OBS

Distinguish from the lift pass, the same type of pass but longer. Also called a "flick pass", a "flick" being a shot made with a quick snap or roll of the wrist. The shortness of the pass has it called a "crisp pass".

Français

Domaine(s)
  • Hockey sur glace
CONT
