Dans les projets de construction, la route a d'abord été décrite comme «route transcanadienne», ce qu'elle devait être. Par la suite, on en a parlé comme étant «La transcanadienne» pour signifier qu'elle était la seule à répondre à ce critère. Sur le monument érigé pour marquer son inauguration, elle est appelée «route Transcanadienne», nom officiel qu'on lui a donné. Un monument érigé à 1330 mètres d'altitude, au sommet du col Rogers, marque la place de l'inauguration de «la route Transcanadienne», le 3 septembre 1962, par le premier ministre John Diefenbaker en présence du ministre des Travaux publics, Davie Fulton, et des ministres responsables dans chacune des provinces. Au début, le gouvernement fédéral défrayait 10 % des travaux, puis a augmenté sa contribution de 40 %. C'est le fédéral qui a payé le tronçon de la route traversant les parcs nationaux du Canada Jasper, Banff, Yoho, des Glaciers et du Mont-Revelstoke. Le monument est constitué de deux arcs de bois s'entrecroisant, entourés d'un muret de pierres. Le grand arc représente la Confédération; le petit, le réseau routier transcanadien. Les trois murets symbolisent les trois océans qui bordent le Canada, l'Atlantique, le Pacifique et l'Arctique. Park is open year-round and the Rogers Pass Information Centre is open 5 days a week. There are 2 campgrounds in the park containing 77 campsites. Glacier also has some designated backcountry camping areas as well as areas where random camping is allowed. Backcountry campers are not required to register, however there is a voluntary registration program. Visitors should check with the park in advance of their trip to find out what services are provided. Visitors overnighting in the backcountry are required to purchase Wilderness Passes(based on the number of nights stayed), this in addition to a daily park pass. The Rogers Pass Information Centre is the main interpretive and general information centre for Glacier National Park. The Rogers Pass Information Centre is located in the heart of the park. It is 70 kms east of Revelstoke, B. C. and 80 kms west of Golden, B. C. There are 20 different trails in Glacier National Park with 13 of them in the Rogers Pass area much suited to day hiking. So plan a trip, camp at Illecillewaet Campground, and enjoy the Mountains. Some of the trails in this area are steep shortly after leaving the trailhead, but eventually grade lessens and you are rewarded with spectacular views of distant peaks and icefields. These two trails follow the same path initially and then split just after crossing 2 creeks. The left fork, the Sir Donald Trail, continues up to the base of Mount Sir Donald with excellent views of the nearby Vaux Glacier. If you look way up on the left-hand skyline of Mount Sir Donald, you may catch glimpses of climbers as they ascend the famous Northwest Ridge.
