Johansson's ro/ro vessels differ markedly in design from the now-traditional Paralla design. Rather than use a large quarter ramp, the owner prefers twin axial ramps, each slewable, one to port and the other to starboard. Normally, the twin stern ramps are used simultaneously in the straight aft position for maximum speed of loading. Detachable caissons containing the cargo are locked into bays in the side of a mother ship which carries only fuel and ballast. When the ship arrives at her destination port, the ballast is adjusted so that she rises. The caissons, on which she actually rides, can be detached and towed into berths for unloading or loading.
